Cause And Effect On Cell Phones Essay

Cellphones have integrated themselves into today’s society so well that they can be seen in the hands of almost every person in a public setting, including those who should be focusing on the road. We hear stories about people getting into accidents because they were on their cellphones all the time so a scientific study was done back in the year 2001 to see how much of an effect being on a cell phone, whether that be texting or talking, would have on a subject’s driving capabilities. This experiment is important to people outside of the scientific community as well due to the fact that this can possibly affect every person’s life one way or another by injuring, or even killing a loved one or oneself in an automobile accident. Experiment 1 proved that there is no significant difference in error when using a handheld phone versus when using a hand-free phone. Experiment 2 on the other hand proved that details such as holding something in your hand, listening, or even speaking do not affect ones driving as much as the difficulty of a task one is cognitively trying to comprehend. In other words, when a driver is asked a question over the phone and has to think of an answer they become more distracted and more of a danger to themselves and to those around them.
These experiments show that driving while on the phone can be very distracting and therefore dangerous. So now that this study has been done the public should know that if they get a phone call while driving they should not answer and if they call someone who answers the phone while driving they should end the conversation as soon as possible.
