There are many distractions in life. Technology, although it can be used for good, can be a distraction. Most people own smart phones and have become attached to them. Although digital media communication may help people be more social online, it prevents people from developing interpersonal skills, limits people’s ability to have a meaningful relationship with others, and distracts people while driving or doing something important. Communicating through digital media is a huge advantage for students, business workers, and people searching for long-lost relatives. Students may use the internet to help them gather information about school and ask their peers for help. It is very apparent that “cell phones are used for quick information retrieval” (Smith 1). Texting and driving have caused a lot of accidents and deaths. Statistics show that 47% of all texting, adults have sent or read a text message while driving. About 75 % of all adults who own phones have admitted to talking on a cell phone while driving, and 49% say they were passengers in a car when the driver was texting. Of these, 44% felt that at some time, cell phone use compromised their safety or the safety of others. 75% of those from ages 12-17 own a cell phone. Out of these, 34% admit to texting while driving. Additionally, 48 percent of teens say they were passengers in a car when a driver was texting. Of these, 40% felt that at some time cell phone use compromised their safety or the safety of others (Fumento 1). While texting and driving, you are not only putting your life at risk, but you are putting everyone around you at risk as well. Using digital media while driving can be more dangerous than drunk driving.
