Second hand smoke from cigarette smoking is actually more dangerous than smoking. Of almost 7000 chemicals, at least 60 are carcinogens that are contained in the smoke cigarettes. Now, England and Wales have passed a law that prohibits people from smoking in cars with children under 18 in them.
Dangers of Second Hand Smoking to Children
Second hand smoke has caused more than two million deaths since 1964. Children are particularly vulnerable as their immune systems are still developing. Studies have proven that there is a greater risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), respiratory and ear infections, including pneumonia, and also aggravating asthma. This does not include the long term damage caused to their systems by second hand smoke. You should talk to your physician to discuss the best approach for you. In the meanwhile, it would be a good thing not to smoke around other people and definitely not around children. Smoking in confined spaces like a car is even more dangerous. So, even it is not currently the law in the United States (except certain states like California), giving up smoking in the car and not exposing your children or other passengers to second hand smoke would be appropriate.
