“Men go to far greater lengths to avoid what they fear than to obtain what they desire.” ~ Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code In The Odyssey, Homer utilizes characterization to validate that fear is often the root of temptation. For example he states, “I will not share your bed unless you swear the mighty oath, o goddess – to insure that you’ll forgo any thoughts of further plots.” (Homer 10.342-344) Odysseus is normally a good man but, like many men, he fears the Gods. This quote inspires me to endure any hardships I experience for two reasons: it reminds me that there could be more difficult events I could face, and that my reward for enduring it will be a meaningful life experience. Because everyone experiences hardships in life, I can look at this quote and be reassured that I am not the only one with a certain problem, but I am also convinced that many people live through more severe events and therefore I can definitely withstand whatever life may give me. When I look at this quote, I recall all my past troubles and, more importantly, what I learned from those. The quote is similar in message to the “hang in there!”…

" What he means is that when a person is put through misfortune rather than a fortunate environment, they're more likely to display their talent. Throughout history, there have been many people that showed what they could do, especially during dark times. Nelson Mandela showed his skills of leadership when apartheid took place in South Africa. Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
