How Can Emily Dickinson's Poetry Be Considered An Apollonian?

Friedrich Nietzsche derived two opposing terms to describe the ways to respond to drama and real-life art. These two distinctions known as Apollonian, the side dominated to by reason, and Dionysian which focuses more on emotion; either emotion to music or the rage of tragedy. Critical thinking is a major part of the humanities, the distinction of the two sides will come in handy while analyzing literature, music, and theater. In literature, the use of word choice to convey a special message is crucial. Emily Dickinson shows us an example of apollonian by her use of words in her poem. She is often thought of as a transition poet because she is transitioning into a modern poet, which does not always use rhythm and rhyme in poems to convey their …show more content…
The rhythm of the song may be more upbeat, with fast paces changing rapidly in association with happiness or joy. Oppositely, it may be slow in rhythm with soft beats in connection with sadness. In music “stately” rhythm is more apollonian than not, because of its stressed beat followed by two more stress beats. This is important because of the energy these specific beats give off, making the listener want to meditate and relax. Apollonian is relaxing with soft, repetitive beats to ease your mind and give you time to reason and think about the beauty of the song. This type of classification is also used at events such as funeral and graduation ceremonies in efforts of a calming sound for the audience. It is also associated with household duties, chores, and school work, the soft beats allow one to focus and accomplish their duties. On the other hand, Dionysian is associated with dancing and freedom with the upbeat rhythms allowing them to enjoy the music while …show more content…
The drama portrayed in the shows is what really catches the attention of the viewer. Drama is more preferred over tragedy in theater because it is closely related to real life and enhancing certain life events. The clash between the actors of The Odd Couple (1965) by Neil Simon is evident. Two friends move into a house together unknowingly understanding how the other person may live. After some time, Oscar Madison, the junky who wreaks the house on a regular basis, is confronted by the owner of the house Felix who is a neatnik. This shows both the respectable Apollonian and disorganized Dionysian characteristics. When Felix is confronted by Oscar about his exaggerated cleanliness, Oscar losses his temper and dumps a plant of linguine on his head (190). Although the viewers would not enjoy Oscars company they are more sensitive towards

I have been writing some assignments in which I had to include poetry, logos, pathos, ethos and many more during this school year. It has taught me how to use each one of them in different ways. During this school year I read a poem which is written by Emily Dickinson and it taught me how poetry is written and it also carries a meaning or an hidden message, also an expression or thought that the person feels. For example, in one of her poems “hope” she uses an example of a bird or a angel to express her thought or feelings and how it can destroy you in a quick instant, but it can also help without expecting anything from you.…

Rosmarie Waldrop is a contemporary poet who seeks to understand the source of art as well as to reform it. She appreciates the paradoxical desires of the writer to break free of long-practiced and redundant structure, yet she understands the human need for order and arrangement. She acknowledges the fact that there is no such thing as an uninfluenced line of poetry; whether the influence is a grammatically and culturally correct form, or an emotional or ideological belief that is shared by poets and authors. According to Waldrop, “Whether we are conscious of it or not, we always write on top of a palimpsest.” (Baker, 75).…

Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare, perhaps the most classic story of love and sorrow to exist within English literature, portrays the depth of young love and lust, and the lengths young lovers would go to in order to preserve it. The unfortunate ending to the tale is the product of numerous decisions marked by impatience, often as a result of the youth and immaturity of the two “star-cross’d” lovers. However, nearly every character contributes somehow to the demise of the couple, due to honor, loyalty, or desperation, to the point where making impetuous decisions becomes a dominant and recurring theme in the drama. Their impulsive manners of abandoning logical deliberation cause suspense, confusion, betrayal, death, and intensity for both the characters and the reader/audience. Impetuosity in Romeo & Juliet is a powerful force that overtakes the characters, propelling them against their fates, their worlds, and, at times, against themselves.…

Emily Dickinson's I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died is a poem in trimeter iambic lines. I believe this adds suspense, closure only being found when the narrator dies. The conclusion is further amplififed with her style choice of all rhymes before the final stanza being half-rhymes. The diction used appears to be simple and literal yet their true meanings may be left to reader interpretation, such as the fly the narrator sees.…

Emily Dickinson, an introverted American poet with epilepsy, wrote her way into the world of literature in a distinctive and intriguing manner. Her words, while often unrhymed, have left a perpetual ringing in the minds of her readers. Her poems will forever provide them with wonder, however, one may find themselves speculating about what influenced Miss Dickinson to write her poetry the way that she did. Richard Wilbur, an American poet, described Emily Dickinson with the following quote; “I think that for her there are three major privations: she was deprived of an orthodox and steady religious faith; she was deprived of love; she was deprived of literary recognition.” (p.859) Wilbur’s interpretation of Miss Dickinson’s…

Emily Dickinson The originative Emily Dickinson was a gifted poet as she composed passionate poems that baffled readers with her literary style. Using her naïve perception, Dickinson’s poetry was written on a daily basis. Through her use of quick-witted metaphors and improvised grammar, Emily Dickinson remains a classic poet whose poetry influenced American Literature today. Emily Dickinson was seen as psychologically unbalanced and reclusive in her life, as shown through her varying emotional poems which had an impact on American Romanticism, through her style of writing, which did not follow the rules of grammar, and through her connotative word meanings which intrigued the twentieth century critiques.…

The Beauty of Nature in “I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose” In 1862, American poet Emily Dickinson read an article in Atlantic Monthly by Thomas Wentworth Higginson entitled “Letter to a Young Contributor” that inspired her. “The article offered witty, practical advice to young writers, pointedly including women, and spoke of the glory of language and the power and mystery of the individual word—ideas that resonated with Dickinson’s own sense of craft” (Leiter 319). Dickinson personally connected with Higginson’s message because she felt that it directly related to her poetry. Additionally, she wrote to him and included her poem, “I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose,” in which she describes picturesque details through descriptive observations.…
