How Can Blackfish Be Targeted In Captivity?

Did you know that all the employees who work at SeaWorld do not need any background experience and don’t even have to understand anything about how orca brains work and how they interact and react to certain situations? Because of this, many employees think that orcas have a sweet personality and won’t harm anyone because they seem like they love what they are doing, but this is not fully true, according to Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the producer of the documentary Blackfish. Orcas are being held captive at SeaWorld, and have been since the 70s. After the death of Dawn Brancheau, Gabriella Copperthwaite started working on a film called Blackfish in response to the death and claims from the Sea World employees that she was targeted because of her …show more content…
She effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos appeals to prove that orca whales are treated inhumanely and show they can become aggressive towards people when being held in captivity. The documentary Blackfish features testimonies, interviews, and videos that provide credibility and prove, through an ethos appeal, that these orcas are not meant to be held captive, but instead born to live in the wild. John Crowe, a diver who captured whales for SeaWorld, spoke about his very own experience with the captivity of orcas. In his interview, he described how he felt guilty and ashamed of what he had done. He said, “It's like kidnapping a little kid away from their mother.” He knew how morally wrong it was, but still separated the whales from their homes and families. One SeaWorld trainer, named John Hargrove, also said in an interview, “We were not told the truth,” to try to get people to understand false information was being given to the trainers when the incidents were brought up and discussed because SeaWorld didn’t want anyone to have the idea that the orcas were

Also with the help of CNN, a news station that many people trust, airing the documentary helps make it more plausible with the information being shown. In one of the many interviews being bared throughout the documentary to show credible information how the whales are treated, they interviewed former Director of Sealand, Steve Huxter. Huxter admitted to the terrible abuse the whales in his park faced. While training their new orca Tilikum, they would pair him with a trained orca and if Tilikum did not do what he was told then both whales would be punished. Deprived of food to keep them hungry, the trained orca became frustrated with Tilikum and would rake him with his teeth as payback.…

The whales were kept in a small dark floating metal box in the ocean all night with all the whales squeezed in. In the morning the orcas would have scratch wounds on them because they would fight during the night.…

Many marine biologists, former trainers, and other experts were brought in the film in order to show statistics regarding the orcas to make the audience feel more comfortable with the information being presented. In other parts of the documentary, the filmmakers appealed to the audience's logos by stating logical evidence which proves some of the sea world's associates misleading and false. The seaworld associates state that the attack on Dawn Brancheau was her fault due to her hairstyle and her teaching techniques. The entire film is relies on false authority. The audience has no one to believe but the trainers used in the film, most of which have not worked for SeaWorld in over 20 years. The experts the movie claims to use could be actors as far as the audience knows, and none of them help strengthen the central argument. Do any of these people know enough about whales in captivity to educate the audience? The film opens up with shots of a trainer in the water surrounded by whales.…

Which then lead to the incident. In an article, i read the abstract just and it talked about how it wasn’t until t5his incident trainers swam and trained with the whales ( Benjamin Wallace, Seaworld Breached). While doing some research I found an article about Seaworld and what happens to killer whales there, that usually won’t happen. On average, an Orca’s life span is usually 30-50 years, while in captivity 15 years( 8 Reasons Orcas Don’t Belong at Seaworld, PETA). Like in the documentary it is talked about the collapsed dorsal fin, how that just a little indicator the it isn’t a healthy environment( Blackfish, killer whale expert scientist).…

Yet, at no point in the article does Sea World take the time to address the main arguments and concerns made by "Blackfish" and defend itself. For some unknown reason Sea World did not address the main issues of the documentary and the fact that they didn’t is suspicious to the readers. Leaving the readers asking the question why didn 't they address the main arguments, to which the readers have already answered it with the conclusion that Sea World might be afraid to address these arguments.…

With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…

While describing this process, Garrett used words like “bombs and torches” to have a negative connotation.
