So, maybe in a Communist country or a place with Islam as a major religion this would be more offensive. But, to a country where Islam is a minority, and communism is not in practice? No, I think not. Animal Farm is being challenged because people think it puts communist leaders in a bad light. Why does that matter in America? In a country founded on freedom, they still feel the need to censor children from history. They aren’t censoring anything, they are depriving. The banning of books can be defined as a form of censorship in which a law or decision prohibits the book from public consumption due to the book’s contents. Whether it’s banned because of political, religious, or moral reasons is all specific to the book itself. Yet, these are the most common reasons as to why a book is banned because their pages discuss these topics in an abrasive way or stray away from public opinion (Book Banning). The Grapes of Wrath, a classic American novel published in 1939, was banned within the same year, specifically in places like Kern County California where the story hit a little too close to home. Since the book depicted a family’s struggles in California during the 1930s, many Californians abhorred the way Steinbeck…

The argument of whether or not banned books should be taught has been debated for years upon years. Why not provide a simple solution that allows each individual decide whether or not they are exposed to these “evil” banned books. This solutions involves creating an option for a class that’s curriculum is based on books that have been challenged or that are or have been banned. This class would still complete the mandatory state standards, which would make it comparable to a normal English class. This is a simple middle ground in which these banned books can still be taught with the lessened worry of offending students, parents, etc.…

Imagine a world where books are banned and restricted from schools just because someone gets offended about the content in the books. The sad truth is that this is a real problem in America today. Some school boards are banning the book To Kill a Mockingbird for the “offensive language” that it uses. The reason that books like this should not have a moratorium placed on them, is because these books are just showing a part of history not trying to offend anyone with a few words.…

We have seen throughout history free nations become dictatorships. From the Chinese Revolution in the 40’s to the Vietnam War. Medical progress rarely occurs without raising ethical issues. These issues are not limited to the use of emerging technologies or human subjects, but extend to the use of non-human animals in medical research. While there is growing concern about the use of animals in research, it seems that supporters and critics of animal rights have focused on the wrong question. That is, whether it is ethically justifiable to use animals as subjects in research if they experience human-like qualities such as pain. Instead of arguing for the affirmative or negative for this question, I focus my attention on whether the question matters.…

When reading Fahrenheit 451 one might assume it is simply about burning books. After all, the title itself alludes to the fact that paper, ergo books, burn at that temperature, but that is far too facile an argument. To say that Fahrenheit 451 is only about burning books is the same as saying driving is simply about pressing ones foot on a pedal. Fahrenheit 451, for lack of a better word, is a tenebrous view of a future that has not only accepted censorship but has embraced it. In the book, society, with few exceptions, has willingly given up many of its freedoms, simply so no one has to feel bad.…
