How Big: A Foot Story

This descriptive and fun read a long is a great book for children! In this story a King wants to build a bed for a Queen, however he does not know an important question to build this bed…. How big is a foot? This kind of story is perfect for introducing non-standard and standard measurement. The story travels through many items to see how big a foot is. Students can use an eraser, book, or even their own foot to see what adds up to a foot or 12 inches. This story is great to have students practice measurement and have fun while doing it!

I chose this story because I have seen it work first hand. Last summer I worked at an Elementary school in Olathe, Kansas. The teacher who taught these lessons was very energetic and it certainly rubbed off on her students. This is a lesson I have worked with and confidently believe in. The story is illustrated to

Divide the class into small groups (4). Have the groups brainstorm ideas and thoughts on what they remembered about the story.

2. Pass out one piece of paper per group. Have a piece of paper for each group with a graph already presented.

3. Explain that each student needs to make a point on the graph to represent how big his or her foot is. Make sure to let the class know that you are going to discuss all graphs next class!

Instructional Goals and Objectives: Students should demonstrate the understanding how many inches are in a feet. At this point the teacher will engage the classroom in adding inches to make a foot.
