How Are You Constantly Trying To Improve Your Writing Skills

Improved Essays
I am not confident in writing essays; therefore, I am constantly trying to improve my writing skills. I set up goals in both WR100 and WR98. They include summarizing more concisely, organizing my thoughts in my essays, and identify grammar mistakes in my essays.
In WR 100, I started to write outlines and they dramatically improved the organization of my paper, since I planned out the layout of my paper beforehand. However, I still make common mistakes in my papers, such as subject-verb agreement, word choices, and verb tenses. My goal in WR150 consist of my previous goals as I know there is still room for improvement. In addition, I want to also work on goals listed by the Writing Center here at Boston University.

There were many instances, either during class or reading comprehension tests, where I could understand individual words but could not grasp the author’s argument. For example, when I read E.B. White’s letters, I was very confused as of why he suddenly directed his attention to his dog or the highway of Maine. I also failed to realize the connection between the two letters when he referenced the first in the second. However, I did understand after the discussion in class, which hopefully I can learn how to read and fully understand a passage after this class.
Last but not least, I want to acquire the skill to respond accurately to questions about academic writing in the form of a thesis and an essay through practicing in WR150. For example, I want to know what should be in my essay about our assignment of a response essay to Mark Twain’s quote. Even though I know what the questions mean, I do not know how to construct my essay to answer those questions.
In conclusion, I am aiming to read comprehensively and respond accurately to questions in my essay while writing constructing better arguments through expressing my ideas and thesis clearly. Hopefully I can improve my skills as a writer after

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

Throughout this course, I have learned several things, from how to write a rhetorical analysis to how to properly cite a quote. Prior to entering English 121 I had no idea what a rhetorical analysis even was. Then after that, I did not know how to properly cite a quote in MLA 8 format. Including learning how to write, I learned about different sides of very controversial subjects from sexual and gender identity though, the biggest problem I saw was the rate that our U.S. military service men commit suicide at. Finally, I learned how to properly format an essay for an example, this is the introduction paragraph and the following paragraphs will be body paragraphs!…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

I enrolled in WRTG 101 because I was advised it was a requirement for my degree in Management Studies. To be completely honest, it was a class I thought I would struggle greatly in; however, in retrospect, I am glad I took the opportunity to enroll. Even though I usually try to pay attention to the way I structure my sentences and grammar, I had no confidence in my writing skills. Whilst I grew up speaking and writing English in Jamaica, it was a different style of English than that used here in the US. Effective writing skills, if used properly, are essential in both professional and personal lives.…
