How Are Literary Devices Used In Animal Farm

Improved Essays
Throughout the novel Animal Farm, an assortment of changes were made and many things were kept unknown until further reading. No one wanted to be on any side in the two books or during the Russian Tsar. Everyone from then on, was against the leader that had been chosen. “Lenin criticized Trotsky , accusing him of harassing the unions and abandoning his support for the Proletariat. Joseph Stalin , took advantage, siding with Lenin to gain the favor.” ( “Leon Trotsky Biography”, n.d) . Inside the novel it states “ They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaws. In a moment he was out of the door and they were after him.” (Orwell,1949, page 53.). They both killed the people who weren’t on their side and took advantage of the amendments that the people had rightfully earned through battle. “Trotsky had …show more content…
There were several statements used as a literary devices. “Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” (“Literary Devices”, n.d)This correlates to the quote, “The building of the windmill, takes two years.” (Orwell,1949, page 48). They used the windmill as the symbol and to show how the animals were once passionate about and how they could work together, to them being against each other and on different sides.. Another literary device is a fable which is defined as,“...a literary device which can be defined as a concise and brief story intended to provide a moral lesson at the end.”(“Literary Devices”, n.d) Orwell expresses this by writing, “Word had gone around during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals.” (Orwell, 1949, page 3). This shows the fable aspect of the novel as animals couldn’t talk, communicate, or dream in real

Allegories are stories that portray symbols and events that are meant to depict hidden meanings to the reader without directly saying it. In Orwell’s Animal Farm the characters and setting are used as an allegory to the Soviet Union. In the story the animals form a rebellion against their human masters, and this is meant to symbolize the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the story as a whole represents the Soviet Union, its people, and policies. The rhetorical components used for the allegory of this story include Animalism, the Manor Farm, Mr. Jones, Old Major, Snowball, Napoleon, and Boxer.…

People are more apt to read this story compared to a lengthy detailed account of the rise of communism. He uses symbols like the windmills as promises that keep falling apart while people, as animals, suffer. I believe his use of allegory rhetorically is successful. He has opened eyes to what can happen on a simple farm when you let one person or a group take over. What he tells you about can happen in any country.…

The passage is a metaphor and foreshadowing (I don’t know if it’s technically foreshadowing if it already happened) of the Marquis’s death and the growing revolution. The “carol of the birds” represents the revolution directly. It is described as “loud and high,” because the revolution is ready to burst, so that burst is being foreshadowed. The bird on the window sill of the Marquis represents Gaspard, who has just killed the Marquis to avenge the death of his own son, and is now looking at the work he has done for the revolution. Gaspard’s “sweetest song with all [his] might” is the fact that he just killed a Noble.…

"The needed only to rise up and shake like a horse shaking off flies"(73). George Orwell compares the proles to horses and the party to flies on the back of a horse. This is demonstrated with the use of a simile. The reason of comparing proles to horses is because of the immense strength shown by booting the opposing party.…

1945 was a prime year for novels: Stuart Little, Pippi Longstocking, and The Glass Menagerie were just a few published in this year. The most satirical novel of that year, however, was George Orwell’s Animal Farm. This novel practically dripped with satire; everything from the setting to the types of animals had a double meaning. The most notably parallel characters were Old Major, Snowball, Napoleon, and Pincher. Three out of four of these characters represent communist leaders, and consequently, three out of four of them are pigs.…

With Joseph Stalin he had reasons as to why they kind of overthrew Trotsky, why they needed to overthrow the government and why he needed to be the peoples “leader”. The overall comparison between the Russian Revolution and Animal Farm is the people and the way that the story line of the book and the actual Russian Revolution happened are very similar and the characters form Animal Farm are really similar to the people who had main parts in the Russian Revolution. The difference between the Russian Revolution and Animal Farm is that one has actually happened and the other didn’t and that the story line had some different pieces here and there. The overall story line of Animal Farm sounds really close to the actuality of the Russian Revolution but they had to change somethings in the story to make it appear more fictional than most people would think. The book was really good and I am pretty sure that if they made a fictional book about the Russian Revolution it would be something really close to what this book is.…

To begin with, Animal Farm is a haptic farm with animals that are against their owner because they believe that there's different classes among one another, the author manipulates the animals by language, and the purpose for this whole fight is to get what they want. People within the society create groups and classes among one another, and many Americans believe in a three-class model that includes the rich, the middle class, and the poor. These different classes are separated by the wealthy, well educated/ a little bit of money, and the poor that is uneducated. An example of this Is stated in Document 1, “All beat her for her backwardness, military backwardness, and for cultural backwardness.” This quote explains a girl that is beaten up…

In Animal Farm, one of George Orwell’s main goals was to portray the Russian Revolution of 1917 in his writing through character’s, events, and concepts. His goal was clearly shown in his text because many important people of the Russian Revolution were seen through animals, events that took place in the Russian Revolution were reflected in his writing, and many concepts of the time were shown in a different form. He accomplished his goal by using simpler characters and an easier concept to grasp. Orwell wrote Animal Farm in the style he did to appeal to a wider variety of people but still reflect an important time in history. His objective for making this book an allegory to the Russian Revolution was to show the readers the negatives of…

We have pigs to represent people in power like Stalin and Trotsky. Dogs are the KGB and all other animals are the lower, working class. Orwell wanted to write this book to show others that communism has good ideas, but it never ends like the people planned. In Animal Farm, it starts with all the animals overthrowing their owner and kicking him off the farm. This directly relates…

The opposition of these two pigs over the plans for the windmill allows Orwell to satirise the struggles of Stalin and Trotsky over such things as the five-year plans and the Comintern (the international wing of the Bolshevik movement). It also allows him to demonstrate the way in which history is rewritten within totalitarian states. Snowball's personal bravery in the Battle of the Cowshed is gradually undermined until the animals are convinced that he was acting with Jones against the rebellion. Snowball's attempts to educate the masses with his slogans and chants contrasts sharply with the raw assumption of power taken by Napoleon and his dogs. The other animals, with their limited intelligence, poor memories and inability to read, are easy victims of Napoleon and Squealer who use writing as a means of backing up their power.…
