How Are Benvolio And Mercutio Alike

Benvolio and Mercutio are complete opposites. Though they may be antitheses, they are great friends in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. They compliment each other like cookies and milk. For example, Mercutio loves to live in the moment while Benvolio likes to be more logical and apathetic. When Mercutio gets out of hand, Benvolio at least attempts to keep him in check. While Mercutio loves being the center of attention, Benvolio is more than happy to stay out of the limelight. They aren't complete opposites though. One thing they had in common was Romeo. They were his best friends. They played different, but complementary, roles in Romeo’s life. Although Benvolio uses his logical mind to think ahead, Mercutio tends to live in the moment. One of the most notable examples of this, is in 3.1 where Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt. Benvolio says in the beginning, “We talk here in the public haunt of men./Either withdraw unto some private place,/And reason coldly of your grievances,/Or else depart. /Here all eyes gaze on us” (Shakespeare.3.1.24-27). Benvolio also remembers that the Prince threatened to kill anyone who fought in the streets. Benvolio knows that Mercutio is here on behalf of Romeo, who Tybalt is demanding to fight. Benvolio is thinking ahead and is trying to stop a fight before it even occurs. Mercutio, on the other hand, seems to have forgotten all about the Prince’s threat or is even thinking that the threat does not apply to him because he is a relative to the Prince. He says, “Men’s eyes were made to look and let them gaze./I will not budge for no man’s …show more content…
Benvolio has been there and supported his friends, Romeo and Mercutio, all throughout the play, while on the contrary Mercutio has not. When Romeo was distraught and heartbroken about Rosaline and in need of a friend, Benvolio was there to comfort him. Benvolio is a gentle, sensitive, and empathetic character and always wants the best for his friends. He tries his best to give the best advice he can, even though Benvolio has a shallow and immature perspective on love. He knows that Rosaline’s intent is to remain pure so he tells Romeo to find someone more beautiful. So Benvolio is protecting Romeo's heart by trying to get his mind off an impossible romantic pursuit. Mercutio on the other hand is not as sensitive and especially not empathetic. Mercutio’s view on love is very different from Romeo’s which makes it harder for Mercutio to understand Romeo's tragedy. Mercutio sees love as unnecessary and takes it as a joke. Even with Mercutio’s disadvantage he still doesn't attempt to comfort Romeo. Mercutio instead makes fun of Romeo for being a clueless lover and liking a girl who would remain pure. Though Mercutio may not be a very supportive and empathetic friend he is very entertaining, while Benvolio is quite the

Mercutio splashed the water in the tub around with his right hand and held the top of his sword with his left hand, still holding the little white towel. He dried his towel and folded it into a square and put it into the palm of his hand, ready for the time that he would need it again. Benvolio didn’t want anything bad to happen to anyone, so as Romeo appeared around the corner and skipped his way over to them Benvolio told him about the bad news that he was worried what would happen if they were to be seen by a Capulet. In the second feud between the Capulets and the Monagues, Mercutio’s words “Oh calm, dishonorable vile submission” shows his loyalty to Romeo even when things have become tough (Shakesphere Act 3 Scene ). “Oh calm vile submission” means “ this is dishonorable having Romeo fight even when he does not want to, let me fight instead.” Stating this highlights Mercutio’s loyalty because he refuses to have Romeo dishonored even when it means risking his own life. Benvolio from the House of Montague introduces friendship into the beginning of the play. His name means “peacemaker” or “well-wisher,” which fits his personality. In Romeo and Juliet he serves as a peacemaker and is very close to Romeo. When the Montagues and Capulets had a brawl in the town, he said that he only “...drew to part them” (1.1.110). This proves that he tried to stop the fighting, and the he tried to keep the peace.…

In addition, both characters exist in order to bring out the best of other characters. Scott's recklessness and wildness bring out his girlfriend's empathetic and nurturing side as she helps him after a night out partying and forgives his obvious mistakes. On the other hand, Mercutio's wildness brings out Romeo's fun side and ameliorates his emotional persona, as seen when he convinces Romeo to go to the banquet (Shakespeare I.III). Scott and Mercutio are both characters that, in many ways, drag the spotlight onto themselves by acting spontaneously and recklessly. Scott and Mercutio's personalities entertain the audience; their spontaneity, high-spirits, and redeeming qualities provide a mixture of drama and comedy.…

Romeo and Mercutio are is my favorite foil in Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the play while Romeo is sappy and feeble, Mercutio is making jokes and ridiculous speeches(Act 1 S 4 line: 53 Queen Mab speech and Act 1 S4 line 25-29 “Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, Too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like a thorn. If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.”) This example demonstrates that Mercutio is a rambling joker that can’t take stuff like “true love” seriously.…

If Romeo would have listened to Friar, he could have had a long intimate marriage, but the fact that he got married so quick portrayed that they did not know anything about each other. Them taking things slower could have gave them the power to tell their parents about their relationship, or even give them time to run away together without the fact that Romeo was not present. To proceed, when Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio were walking, Benvolio mentioned to Mercutio that he was a very short-tempered person, and that he had many mood swings, after Mercutio tried to say that he was the one with these problems. However, as Benvolio implied Mercutio was talking about himself they crashed into Tybalt, who was a Capulet (their enemy). They then began to bicker and started a sword fight, as the text stated Mercutio saying the…

Shakespeare uses Mercutio’s blunt nature to place emphasis on Romeo’s role of a blind lover. Romeo is fanciful and fashionable as a young lover with idealistic concepts of love as he is only able to express his love for Rosaline through figurative language; describing his state as “nor mad, but bound more than a mad man is: shut up in prison, kept without any food, whipped and tormented…”. He denies on numerous accounts that love has made him delusional, but on the contrary, it’s the “religion” of his eye. The passionate response he gives when rejecting Benvolio’s advice to replace his love for Rosaline with that of another, highlights his immaturity and inexperience as a lover. However, it is not until Romeo lays eyes on Juliet that he becomes aware of how artificial his love for Rosaline was as he questions, “Did my heart love till now?…
