How Adversity Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Tragedies, misfortunes, and disasters can alter the course of one’s existence. While existing only a fifth of my projected life span, illustrations of adversity have begun to shape my life. Maya Angelou clarified adversity best when she stated, “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” Not a day goes by that I do not fail and succeed in some way, yet the lessons learned from the medley of failures and successes blend to create the ink in which I paint my Mona Lisa. My first adverse situation presented itself in the form of illness. At the age of eight, my sister was tackled by Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Initially, she was given only a 20% chance of survival with no promise of tomorrow. Therefore, I strive to live every day with the mentality it could be my last. Despite my young age, I was acutely aware of the agony my family endured from having her life essentially put in limbo. The cancer caused years of my childhood to be without a mother, father, and sister, and I subsequently became known as “the brother of the girl with cancer.” Nonetheless, since the origin of this misnomer, it has been my mission to not only forge a name for myself, but to also build my own identity. …show more content…
I was shuffled amongst family members while my parents dealt with the looming possibility of losing their daughter. While other children’s parents were attending their ballgames and parent-teacher conferences, my parents were dealing with doctors and hospitals. When my family was at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, not a day went by without conversing, but weeks went by without meeting. It was not until later that I learned the guilt they felt for leaving me added to the burden they were already

“Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.” This quote by William Arthur Ward demonstrates the profound impact that adversity has on everyday individuals. Furthermore, this impact is especially visible in the texts, “Divisadero” and “The Rose That Grew From Concrete”, but also in our everyday lives, such as in the devastating form of climate change. Adversity shapes an individual’s identity in one of two ways: by building character strength or by breaking it.…

Everyone has faced a certain point in their lives where adversity has led their aptitudes out. Adversity affects people in different ways whether physically, mentally, or financially. In the quote by Horace, a roman poet, adversity is viewed as hardships that people overcome every day in their lives that make them who they are today. Although adversity can make people endure, adversities develop the person to become prosperous and bloom vigorous and effulgent like a rose. From personal experience and on views on successful people, I agree with Horace verbal expression because I believe that everything one surmounts in life makes them prosper and strive in everything they do.…

The Reactionary Life The protagonist, Charlie from the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky along with myself demonstrate the idea of how it is not about what life throws in our way, but rather how we react to what life throws that can truly define us as a person. Within the novel, we see Charlie dealing with a multitude of stressful and traumatic events. For example, when his best friend Michael committed suicide and when his favourite aunt Helen died in a car accident, it was especially rough when he realized he was sexually abused by his aunt Helen. These are all examples that show the obstacles life can throw at you, and like Charlie we may not always react well.…

All people in the world have gone, are going, or will have gone through hard times in life. Adversity, according to the Roman poet Horace, can have the effect of eliciting talents that one did not have at a time. He expressed that in prosperous circumstances these talents would have stayed inactive if it weren’t for the adversity. I agree with Horace being that it can be seen as true in the lives of many, including Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Beethoven, and George Washington Carver. There is a popular saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”…

I am a first generation student reared in a community where attending college was advocated, but for many persons it was a dream. Generations before me had this desire. However, it can be difficult to materialize dreams, hopes, and aspirations when we perceive our circumstances are stronger than our desires. It is easy for individuals accustomed to adversity to become hopeless, and this generalization poses some validity because I was one of those individuals. As the poverty cycle continued to perpetuate in my community, my desire to achieve became stronger.…

Adversity is a normality. Neither looked down upon, nor viewed as a worthy experience. It is commonly found, flourishing in our lives, whether in our roots, or in our branches, birthed with us, or haphazardly appearing throughout our lives. It strains the human mind and soul, yet is not treated like so. Physical and mental tolls are taken, but a cry for help is desperate, and often, one finds themselves neglecting or overlooking another’s adversity.…

Albert Einstein once stated, “Adversity introduces a man to himself,” and it is the struggles one faces in life that bring about a further understanding of oneself and one’s capabilities. One can only know how much they can endure after experiencing the stress of demanding situations. The ability for adversity to transform humans lives is less dependent on the form that adversity comes in and more reliant on the way one manages it which will expose one’s true character and ability to adapt to change. This idea complements Horace’s assertion which expresses how adversity has a way of stimulating certain capabilities that would not normally appear under the circumstances of success and prosperity. Therefore, it can be said that adversity does…

Permitting family presence was also noted to positively impact the family’s clarity concerning the situation and process of events. Despite common beliefs, regarding the occurrence of additional trauma, parents who were present at the time of resuscitations deny any long-lasting distress. Many parents stated that their focus was strictly on their child, and for that reason they have no long-lasting memories of the event. It is believed that allowing the family to see and hear all that has been done, in an aim to save their loved one’s life, may permit the family to begin the mourning process in the absence of assigning fault to the health care providers. Furthermore, when examining the effects of family presence on coping, McAlvin and Carew Lyons (2014) concluded…

Essay: It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light. Introduction: If miracles have ever happened, they have happened in adversity; if warriors have ever won, they have won in warship; if discoverers have ever discovered, they have discovered in a painful encounter; if they have ever emerged, it is because they had never vanished. All the great accomplishments of men and women were achieved owing to their spirit of 'never give up.' Sooner or later, darkest moments befall upon each and every individual: rich or poor; younger or older, worker or leader, but the most positive aspect of darkest moments is that they do not last for good and all.…

Maya Angelou once said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” In her poem called “Alone”, she gives an extended example of a reason as to why some people are unable to thrive in life and why others do. “Alone” is about the fact that no one can survive in this rough, cruel world alone, and Maya Angelou depicts this through mood, figurative language, and symbolism. First of all, stanza one of “Alone” starts off with a mood of isolation and loneliness because it paints a picture of someone soul-searching for an answer to their problems, which they think they may have found: people need each other to make it through life. The author, Maya Angelou,…
