Influence Of Culture On Teenage Life

The types of ways adolescents are influenced by their culture changes over time. Even if the topic is the same, like family life, factors of life that are influenced by culture change extremely over time. There are many reasons why this happens, but this paper is going to look at five different factors of culture today that influences an adolescent 's life.
Social Media- The social media world increased dramatically in the past decade. The first social media websites included websites like, myspace and facebook; but have since then expanded to many other forms of social networking. According to Gwenn Schurgin O’Keeffe and Kathleen Clarke-Pearson (2011), a recent poll was taken that said 22% of teenagers look their favorite social media website 10 times a day and more than half of time log on a least once a day (p. 800). Social media makes it easier and quicker for teenagers to communicate with one another, which is a huge aspect of American culture. Although social media, entertainment, and music are huge influences on a teenager life; a adolescents peers influence them the most and are connected to all of these other influences during this stage of development. One of the most important aspects of life is the community of people we build around us. For some people it is family, but there are plenty of people in the work without family and have connected closely to the friends around them because of that. According to Valerie Ulene (2011) teenagers are always looking for ways to “separate themselves from their families and begin to identify themselves as individuals” (para. 6). My sister is currently in this stage of development and I see this happening to her more than ever.
