Antoinette, a cancer survivor, once said “Surviving does not just mean staying alive…. It means LIVING to your potential.” Many people survive in everyday life. Many survive while having different traits than others. Having that someone or something can help one survive any situation. By having something to live for, it keeps one going. One can think about that something or someone to have a reason to survive. In the article “How a Man Survived 438 Days Stuck at Sea,” the book Perks of Being a Wallflower, and the song “Carry On,” survival is shown. Having something to live for helps one survive. In “How a Man Survived 438 Days Stuck at Sea,” by Jonathan Franklin, having someone to talk to and to think about helps Salvador Alvarenga survive.

Charlie has been through a lot in his life like losing his best friend and going through things he can not remember. After his friend died he started to write a diary. In the diary he wrote to an anonymous person telling that person about his life and all he was going through. “Dear friend” he would write and then explain what all was going on in his life while connecting with the person he was writing to. While writing to this anonymous person Charlie connected with the one he was writing to ,which helped him feel like he had someone to talk to. While writing he also made new friends that helped him get through day by day. One day while at a football game he met Sam and her brother, Patrick, and became best friends with them. Sam then invited Charlie to a party after the game. After the party Charlie became a part of their group. With the help of his new friends Charlie survived high school. He finds out that his friends really were helping him because at the end of the book Sam and Patrick had to go to college and Charlie still had to finish school. After they left for college Charlie had a break down and ended up at the hospital. Overall having friends helped Charlie survive most of high school. However now that they are gone off to college he believes that he can conquer the rest of high school because they helped him know how to survive through high school.
