An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

Across the variety of age groups that were interviewed in order to gather data, there were a few similarities that arose. The first similarity was the use of situational humor by almost all of the informants. This consisted of poking fun at everyday life, telling stories that were found humorous, or mentioning things that were may have been out of character and were found to be funny. The use of situational humor is believed to function like other types of humor in that it is conversation filler, it is more often than not spoken when there is a lull in a party or family gathering. This type of humor, although often off the cuff, does not have an intention to offend anyone but rather, as Subject M1 mentioned, it is used to “lighten things up…

You see they were all “friends” or so to speak. They all were polar opposites. Jeffrey had a bad temper and got angry at practically anything, Holly, well Holly was super sensitive and over-emotional, Devon was the silliest Oreo you’ll ever encounter, and Monica, oh Monica, she didn’t care, and I mean she didn’t care. Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…

Before my Grandma makes Pani Puri for my family, she makes sure we have all the ingredients. She recalls the recipe from memory, adding the ingredients without measuring tools, in what looks like a haphazard fashion. Her cooking can be best described in three words: delicious organized chaos. Just like my Grandma’s Pani Puri recipe, the Indian Community has a variety of ingredients, each with its unique properties and effects. While Hindu camp and the cultural events are rigidly structured and organized in advance, once the event starts, the food, music, and interactions between family and friends become spontaneous.…
