I planned on coming to the University of Houston Main Campus to study music at the Moores School of Music. As a matter of fact, three weeks after sending in an application to the Moores School, I received an email telling me to be prepared for an audition. I spent almost every bit of free time preparing, and a couple days after my audition, I received a $4000 scholarship offer. Upon receiving my first test scores, I immediately began to think of ways to improve. I began studying vocabulary words, practicing more tedious math problems, and taking more practice tests. As a result, my overall test score is now 1570. I did not have a lot of time between my academic studies and music to study for the SAT, but by moving my schedule around I was able to squeeze in a few minutes every day.
I devote twice as much effort to my academics than I do my music. I aim to keep my grades above a “B” average. I will often stay up until the early hours of the morning getting my work done and preparing for the next day. I also took up the challenge of taking an Advanced Placement Psychology class for the spring semester. Advanced Animal Science is an advanced class that I’m taking this year as well.
In addition to a music performance degree, my plan is to obtain a teaching certificate. A teaching certificate would provide me with a backup plan in case my music performance career does not work out. I talked with my orchestra director to see if he could give me any pointers, and he has taught me a lot. I attend every after school sectional class that he gives no matter what instrument, and watch how he will give instruction or provide direction if a mistake is made. I also teach a couple students of my own every week and apply what I have
