Houston Community Service

Improved Essays
I performed my community service hours here at The Houston Food Bank located at Port wall which happens to be the Main Warehouse. Houston Food Bank is Houston's largest food donation foundation. The organization provides food & resources to the homeless and hungry across Southeast Texas. This is a great place to give back to the community, and our community always needs the help not only in time of natural disasters or holidays. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never really volunteered. Well, not counting the community service I had to do in high school. With that said, I thought the work here would be a little intimidating. This was my first time volunteering here and I was very impressed with how the team works together and gets all the volunteers in place & on the job. What a great experience. The Houston food bank is great that you can bring your kids to help volunteer as well. However, not infants or toddlers, but older children and teens. I was made to understand by the lady at the help desk that; Since Harvey hit Texas, there have been over 17,000 volunteers that have gone through the food bank and helped out. That is higher in volunteer volume then a typical 3 month span. It has been amazing to see so many people come together …show more content…
I attended with a group from work but there were hundreds of people there that day helping. We were designated to pack boxes to be filled with nonperishable food items and toiletry goods for adults and bags for infant’s diapers, etc. The rooms designated for volunteers to work are well organized and the people who lead the volunteers are helpful and show great team leadership. The facility was cool in temperature and the music was jamming'. At one point, I forgot I was volunteering I was having so much fun. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don't mind sweating

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…
