The novel House on Mango street by Sandra Cisneros is about a Latina girl name Esperanza who expresses and talks about her life growing up in Chicago with her family. Throughout the story she goes through different changes mentally and physically while meeting new people along the way. In the second novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie Crawford is a middle aged lack woman whom can be witnessed as also being on a journey trying to find a factors worthy on a relationship. Throughout the story, Janie marries three times and her relationships end up in tragedies, however she is always content. This is a theme in a coming-of-age novel, and in The House on Mango Street this can be seen as Esperanza struggles to define herself, which leads her to indicate every action she takes and encounter she comes upon.Throuhgout the novel Esperanza goes through physical changes which lead her to proceed in finding herself as the woman she is becoming. In the beginning she has an idea of wanting to change her name which would lead her to define herself on her own terms instead of accepting the name her family gave and by changing her name she thinks that will start to happen. On the other hand, in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie the protagonist struggles to find herself by undertaking a spiritual journey were she'll learn love and self-awareness. Through Jody Starks it can be witnessed that the novel also shows another method of self-definition. Jody is the type of person that attempts to achieve fulfillment through the exertion of power. He is the type that tries to purchase and control everyone and everything revolves around him; he takes advantage and exercises his authority hoping to subordinate his environment to his will.
