Changing gender roles is like rowing upstream against the current. Esperanza is a girl who sees the stereotypical life of woman; Esperanza wants to break that stereotype, she wants to be the man at the table. In House on Mango Street, author Sandra Cisneros illuminates the idea that stereotypical gender roles can alter based on one's determination to change.This becomes clear to readers when Esperanza and Alicia stay on track to better their lives, as opposed to Sally who makes poor decisions, allowing her to become the typical women on mango street.

In the vignette My Name, Esperanza’s name came from her great grandmother. Esperanza’s great grandmother became confined by her marriage, this causes Esperanza to avoid her life’s ambitions not being fulfilled like her grandmother's; “Esperanza. I have inherited her name but I don't want to inherit her place by the window” (11). This shows readers how Esperanza has a strong will to go beyond Mango Street though her writing. In the vignette The Monkey Garden, Sally let's boys use her; “ One of Tito's Friends said you can’t get the keys back unless you kiss us…. It was just a kiss, that's all. A kiss for each one. So what, she said” (97). This shows how Sally is more insecure because she allows herself to be used due to the lack of self respect she has for herself.
Overall Esperanza and Alicia broke the stereotypes for women on Mango Street by making a solid will for themselves. In contrast Sally showed how her lack of self respect and insecurities caused her to become the stereotypical woman on mango street.
