One of Poe’s many symbols is the title itself. “The house of Usher” is not only where the Usher family lives, but it is also how the surrounding people referred to them. The upside down image shows how out of the ordinary the Usher family really was. When he first looks into the tarn his impression is not good, but he puts that behind him because he is there to help a childhood friend out (Bailey pg.119-193). This relates to them putting the sister in the tomb when they thought she was dead, the narrator did not want to do it but he was there to help a friend. After he had been there he realized that the outside of the house was falling apart just like the people on the inside.
The house and everything surrounding it is dreadful a lot like the Usher family. Beginning from the outside of the house all the way to the inside it is troubling just like Mr. Usher. He is not only experiencing physical illness, but also mental (Davidson pg. 181-198). After all he put his wife, sister, and the only family member left in a casket while she was still alive. The description that Poe used to describe the house fits Mr. Usher too.
Poe did an excellent job in “The Falling of the House of Usher” of relating everything together and also setting up a spooky feel. This short story is filled with similes, this is only a few. He uses a fascinating technique of keeping the reader engaged with his use of
