In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s House of the Seven Gables, all of the character were affected by politics and wealth that ran through out the families’ history. Thus, this created noticeable class differences amongst the main characters and their ancestors. These class and status differences are associated with wealth, gender and race. However, Hawthorne empowers the family to develop new social ties. He breaks the role of women and changes the economic status of the family. Hawthorne incorporates race differences subtly through the emergence of the ancestors and the peculiar instances with the boy who devours the Jim Crow ginger bread cookies.
