One best thinks he is a god, while a young boy thinks he is a bad angel. In The House of Asterion by Jorge Luis Borges, there is a Minotaur by the name Asterion that is in a labyrinth that he thinks he created, and he is not as mean as you would think. While in Slam, Dunk, & Hook byYusef Komunyakaa, there is a boy and his team that plays basketball, and during the story the boy, called Sonny Boy, has to deal with his mother’s death while playing basketball still. In each of the stories the characters have to deal with the same things, but each story deals with it in different ways. The House of Asterion and Slam, Dunk, & Hook share many of the same ideas like redemption, challenges, and religion but are used quite different ways. In both of the stories the characters deal with a challenge that they must overcome. Theseus from The House of Asterion must overcome the challenge of slaying the Minotaur and saving 9 people a year from dying. He has to battle his way through the labyrinth and slay the best: while in Slam, Dunk, & Hook, Sonny Boy has to deal with the challenge of his mother dying right before a game. This is a hardship that many people couldn’t do but Sonny boy did it for his team and played his heart out, while Theseus did it for fame and glory. …show more content…
In Sonny boys case he wants redemption after his mother died, and play his hardest for her. I does this by practicing so hard that the “backboard splinters”, and because of that he redeems himself during the game. But in the other story the Minotaur wanted to redeem himself. He think that every time he kills someone there soul is cleaned of all sin, and he wants to die so he can achieve this honor. This is way while fighting Theseus after he knows he will lose he lets himself die. While each are different in achieving this redemption, they all end up better

Realistic and Fictional heroes have portrayed the literary standard of what a hero is supposed to be. Each genre shares great comparison to one another describing the characteristics of a hero. They each share positive characteristics that provide an interpretation of strength and intelligence but also share negative characteristics such as a dwelling past or a sickness that they could not overcome. Even with these great comparisons, realistic and conventional hero's personality and journey towards heroic power differ. In many works, books, movies, and other aspects of entertainment, the hero’s journey is not uncommon to the typical reader or moviegoer. The hero’s journey is one of the oldest tools to compose a piece of literature or work, however, it hardly ever fails to strike the audience as entertaining whether it be about a fictional or nonfictional occurrence. The journey to contain evil, both mythologically and realistically, requires sacrifice and courage in the face of fear, demonstrated in The House of Hades and Saving Private Ryan. One example of courage in the face of fear occurs in Rick Riordan’s…

I think that the story of Osiris, killed by his own brother and eventually becoming a judge of the underworld, show that even in the underworld, one can positively or negatively impact the outside world. For example, the dismemberment of Osiris was compared to the annual cutting and threshing of wheat and barley, indicating he would rise again with the growth of the crops. Another example is when the gods wrote to dead Osiris, who wrote back threatening to send demons of the underworld because his son had been defrauded of his inheritance. Another story is the one of Siosire, who takes his father to the underworld to show him the fates of two different men.…

Eventually, she learns to forgive the gunman. The Sniper and Cranes have differences that give two opposite ideas of the story. The main focus of The Sniper targets the civil war and the repercussions that follow it, whereas Cranes focuses on the loyalty one has to family and friends. The Sniper expresses the toll the war has taken on the soldier and how it affects him by giving detail about the feelings and thoughts he has about the war. The author wants the reader to know that the sniper is dedicated to his duty and does not think twice about the decisions he has to make. In Cranes, the opposite occurs; Songsam goes out of his duty and gives Tokchae the chance to escape instead of taking him to be killed, as he volunteered to do in the first place.…
