House Industries Research Paper

House Industries is a type foundry in Yorklyn, Delaware and was founded in 1994 by Andy Cruz and Rich Roat. A lot of the fonts that they create have a very throwback look about them, but “House Industries actually offers a wide variety of styles” and often their typefaces are rendered from hand-drawn letterforms” (Ai Online).
Here is a great example of the Retro style that House Industries has become known for, being used to promote singer Beyonce Knowles.

One interesting thing that this type foundry does to promote fonts that they have created, and is a brilliant marketing strategy, is to create items inspired by the typefaces and sell them in an online store (http://www.houseind.com/objects/). House Industries sells prints, blocks, décor

They have said themselves: “We could run a photo through a few computer filters or scan and auto-trace some found lettering, but it seems to us more direct and efficient to create artwork by traditional means. Not only is the hands-on approach more fulfilling for the artist, it generates loads of self-indulgent original artwork to hang around the office.” (House Industries).
Rather than being like nearly every other type foundry and create work from only digital means, House Industries puts a lot of time, effort, and care into the type that they create. They do this by hand, which is a great feat in today’s oversaturated market of digital creations.
When one visits the House website, they will see that the site is highly interactive, especially so on the page of available fonts; one mouse-over reveals a graphic with said font and all included styles. The looks of the styles are unique and cohesive to the brand that House Industries represents.
House also offers a service called Photo-Lettering which even has an app for download. This service allows people to browse and purchase a single typesetting for a set price, which is something I’ve never seen

    Boston Jail Style

Completed in 1851, the Charles Street Jail was a collaboration between architect Gridley James Fox Bryant, widely considered Boston’s most accomplished architect of the time, and Rev. Louis Dwight, a prominent Yale-educated penologist whose travels shaped his interest in and advocacy for prison reform. Thought to be one of the best examples of the “Boston Granite Style” of the mid-19th century, the building “resonated with a strength and dignity appropriate for the era and for Bostonians’ sensibilities,” said historians. In 1973, after 120 years of housing some of Boston’s most notorious criminals, prisoners revolted because of poor living conditions and the jail was declared unfit and in violation of the inmates’ constitutional rights. On Memorial Day weekend 1990, the last prisoners were moved to the new Suffolk County Jail.…
