Raising server wages are crucial to society’s growth for single parents, struggling families with one or both parents serving, and college students working in the industry while juggling their college career. In Michael Saltman’s “Raising D.C.’s tipped minimum wage would hurt, not help, servers”, Saltman reviews and explores the downfalls of raising server wages. Saltman declares, if wages were raised from roughly $2.13 an hour to state minimum wage, servers would ultimately bring home less income, as well as a decrease in valuable hours servers need to provide for their families. Regardless of the category their friends, family, or loved ones fall into, each and every business owner, consumer, or conservative indeed have some sort of tie to…

Since 1938, the minimum wage has been raised several times; usually it would occur almost every year, sometimes it would happen three or four years later. But now, it hasn’t changed for the past five years. In 2007, the minimum wage was $5.85; in 2008 it was raised to $6.55, and then again in 2009, it was raised to $7.25. It is now the year 2014, and the minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour. A full-time worker who is paid the minimum wage would make an annual income of $15,080.…

After reading the essay “Should Fast-Food Workers Be Paid $15 per Hour” written by a student who goes by the name of Trudie Makens, it was clear that her piece fell under the genre of “articles in public affairs” (27) even as an exploratory essay for a class discussion. The topic of whether minimum wage should be raised or kept the same is discussed through various viewpoints from minimum wage employees to a business perspective. The essay’s purpose is to allow the reader to be exposed to the two sides of the argument and allow the reader to formulate their own opinions on the topic of potentially raising the minimum wage of low income jobs. Makens’ essay was incredibly effective in allowing the reader to ultimately come up with their own…

When post-incarceration hourly wages and incarceration hourly wages are included in the framework, the type of person most likely to commit a crime remains roughly unchanged except now the number of previous incarcerations and having committed a crime in the other category are no longer significant. Moreover, post-hourly incarceration wages have a significant positive effect on the time from release to conviction net of the time from release to arrest. While PIE participation was not significant when recidivism is measured as time from arrest to conviction, it is important to note that due to the overlap between PIE, TI, and OTW a large gap is required in order to obtain significance between these groups.…

In the argumentative essay titles increased minimum wage by Jordan Boxley the thesis has been introduced with valuable information that introduces the main idea of the essay. The arguable issue was to raise minimum wage or to leave it the same. The strongest reason used is that it would improve the stability of the economy. While reading the article in the New York Times, “The Minimum Wage: How Much Is Too Much?” written by Alan B. Krueger, I was enlightened by his main focus of topic. Stating, “Research suggests that a minimum wage set as high as $12 an hour will do more good that harm for low-wage workers, but a $15-an-hour national minimum wage would put us in uncharted waters, and risk undesirable and unintended consequences.” Krueger gives a different twist on the debated topic of national minimum wage. Though Krueger uses evidence to back his claims he really focuses on his main point, minimum wage can be set at $12 nation wide but once it reaches $15, we could be in trouble. He explains how more than half the estates, representing 60% of…

An hourly pay rate would actually do more harm than good. With no incentive to work hard and get a good tip, servers might not work as hard and give customers the best possible experience. In an interview with restaurant servers “They all strongly agreed that overall service quality would drop precipitously if their tip income were replaced with a fixed hourly wage” (McKenzie 2). I just make sense to keep the tipping system. There is actually a current law that states that businesses don’t have to pay their servers minimum wage.…

Every day there is something unique and novel that human beings can learn from unfamiliar and even familiar things that take part in their daily life. Most people approach the world with a beginner’s mind, approaching the world with preconceptions, assumptions, and opinions, because of personal experiences acquired during their lifetime. It has become human nature to think in a habitual way, in which events, thoughts, and feelings are preoccupying the individual’s mind, which in turn is deterring a person’s ability to think and see the other perspective. It is important to break this habitual ways of thinking and eventually obtain “sociological imagination” or the ability to understand the macro-scale and micro-scale factors that are interplaying…

Minimum wage could be the one lifeline that is able to sustain a teen or a struggling family lifestyle. For some of us who do not know what minimum wage is, it is the compensation that an employee receive from a certain set amount of hours they work under their employer. You may know that there are two sides to this situation: the employee and the employer. My personality type according to the Jung personality quiz is INTP. I mostly agree with the description of INTPs except for the part that states INTPs prefer word games and strategy games. I find such structured games to be boring, and I’m not good at them, I prefer games that have a story-telling element. I also like card games that require speed and pattern recognition, like peanuts and Egyptian war. I am very logic oriented, which is common for INTPs.…
