Watson and Sherlock Holmes. Holmes’s cleverness and sense of style are what define Holmes the powerful detective he is but, in no way is he easy to have around as a friend, matter fact it is extremely difficult to have Holmes as a friend. During Watson’s time at Baskerville hall we find out that Holmes is there all along providing an extra set of eyes for Watson, when Watson finds out yes, he does forgive him but I find it extremely insulting for Holmes to keep his best friend in the dark. Later in the novel Holmes orders Sir Henry to do whatever he asks of him to do without any questions which is also another bad characteristic, it almost risks Sir Henry’s life. Such characteristics certainly mean that Holmes is not as flawless as he is portrayed. Even though Watson does not lack significant characteristics aside from not being as clever as Holmes, he does however lack the perception of art, which eventhough is a foolish judgement of his character this characteristic could have proven beneficial to this specific case. Towards the end of the story as Holmes is spectating the portraits in Baskerville hall he can easily identify the artist and instantly discovers the resemblance between Stapleton and the portrait of Hugo Baskerville. Watson seems to not really pay a great deal to art compared to Holmes “"Watson won't allow that I know anything of art, but that is mere jealousy, because our views upon the subject differ"” (Conan Doyle 169). If Watson is as accurate as Holmes with portraits, then he should have been able to identify the link between Stapleton and Hugo from the first day he arrived at the hall and that way they could have moved all their resources towards Stapleton and avoided all the risks and
