According to the Ebrary article “Order of Genocide Race, Power, and War in Rwanda,” Straus (2008) stated that “Genocide is ultimately about how ordinary people come to see fellow citizens, neighbors, friends, loved ones, and even children as “enemies” who must be killed.” This means that people dislike other people because of their race, gender, education, and more. In the last few decades, genocide has occurred in several parts of the world. The word genocide means that a certain ethnic group undergoes the process of being annihilated. The film is about a hotel manager named Paul who tries to save Tutsi refugees from the troops known as the Hutu. The reason why I chose to watch “Hotel Rwanda” is because I wanted to learn not only what it is like as a citizen of Rwanda, but also want to follow the footsteps of certain people who saved the lives of other people. Another reason is that I wanted to know how their culture is different from the culture in the United States. Lastly, it would be beneficial for me to understand what is going on in the African culture so I can learn lessons from that particular culture and help others resolved problems in my own community without resorting to violence. Otherwise, more violence will make the situation a lot worse than anyone can ever imagine. These violent situations are also happening in the movie Hotel Rwanda. It also talks about refugees when people escape from one part of the country to another due to the genocide. Sometimes, refugees might leave their homeland if the war does not end. In the movie, the Tutsi refugees escaped with Paul and the rest of his family because the genocide was getting intense.
The International Criminal Tribunal of Rwanda talks about the case of Nyiramasuhuko. It deals with the six accusers who were guilty of heinous crimes during the genocide of 1994. One of the accusers was a student while the others were working in the military. These criminals will face prison sentences from a few years behind bars to life without the possibility of parole.
If the genocide would have ended, then things will go a lot smoother. Otherwise, using violence as means to achieve goals leads to more violence. In Hotel Rwanda, Paul did everything he could for all of the inhabitants of Rwanda to make sure they live in peace. Anyway, there are always going to be people that do things that would make other ethnic groups hate each other, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that people must act justly no matter how bad the situation would be. If everyone put their differences aside, then they can make a difference in the world that they live
