The connection between humans and the land has undeniably been a source of vitality and community for centuries. In recent history, many people are becoming more and more alarmed by the disappearance of this natural land they grew up on, and therefore the memories connected with this land. In Tamale Traditions, by Amy Coplen, the author utilizes anecdotes and careful word choice to manipulate the reader’s emotions toward understanding this invaluable connection. Her goal in provoking strong emotions in the reader is to make them more receptive of her message of environmental conservation. Throughout this passage, the writer consistently, and persuasive, builds up her argument through making the blanket statement that all humans are connected to nature.…

Hot sauce may sting your tongue but experts say its health benefits make it worth the spice. TIME Magazine reports David Popovich of Massey University in New Zealand studied the health effects of hot sauce and found out that the active ingredient in peppers called capsaicin could kill cancer cells. Popovich, who studies bioactive compounds in plants, used capsaicin on top of cancer cells for his experiment. He discovered that capsaicin could reduce growth of cancer cells through a process called apoptosis --- a sort of cell "suicide" which eventually recycles them into new cells with the help of some mutations.…

When people think of Hispanic foods they think hot, spicy foods, lots of flavor, rice and beans, and tortillas. When people think this they are not wrong, Hispanic food is a flavorful and many spices are used; the culture and its people’s customs have much to do with this. According to Grace Austin and Damian Johnson of Diversity Journal “the term Hispanic alludes to a person’s place of origin, referring to persons from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central and South America.” Since there are many different sub groups within the term Hispanic, I will narrow it down to the Mexican culture since each subgroup does vary in the foods they choose to eat and the spices they mix in.
