Hospitality industry is a broad sector as it includes different categories of business fields where individuals and companies invest in such as the in the food and beverage sector or lodging and accommodation. Hospitality is therefore a complex industry because it includes wide range of economic activities such as job creation and business activities that are aimed towards improvement of economic status of people and companies in the industry. The success of organizations in the hospitality and tourism sector is dependent on the quality of the services and products that are offered. It requires that the companies or individuals who invest in the area have skilled manpower, and workforce that has sufficient knowledge and expertise in hotel management …show more content…
It is of great importance to note the industry relies on the market segments that are connected to product/service, pricing and distribution (Thomas, 2013). This is an indication that the categories evident in hotel and tourism sector operate under the three crucial areas, as they aid in determination of the position and progress of the firms that invest in the area in terms of sales. There are numerous job opportunities that are created by the hospitality industry, some which require training and skills while others integrate manual work. For instance, in the foods and beverages sector, graduates who have done hotel management and catering have a great chance of securing jobs as bakers, bartenders, cooks, café/restaurant manager or camping ground manager among others. Thus, it can be argued that any job associated with offering services or foodstuff can be categorized to be one of the segments of hospitality industry. Food and Beverage- This sector concentrates in production and sale of foods and drinks to customers, and is considered to be the largest segment in the hospitality sector in all countries across the world. The nature of business in the food and beverage industry ranges from casual to fancy, large to small, and luxurious to economical depending on the quality of services and products offered, and the nature of the targeted customers for the business. The number of employees hired by firms in the industry is dependent on the flow of customers, the nature of foods or drinks most consumers are interested in, the workload in the sector. There are three types of foodservice that are exercised in most companies that have invested in the sector, which include the commercial, institutional and foodservice with a customer business. The commercial foodservice is designed to compete for customers in order to increase their profit, while institutional foodservices supplies food and drinks to institutions such as schools, hospitals and prison. On the other hand, foodservice within the customer business involves establishment of a business in regions within consumer business such as sports arena. In this segment, a graduate may become a restaurant manager because of the managerial knowledge and skills that are introduced while undertaking hospitality management courses.
