My patient was a 77-year-old woman and she had COPD, hypertension, and chronic microcytic anemia. When I first went in the room with my patient I went with the RN and watched her perform her assessment and introduced myself to her and told her I was a student nurse and would be helping taking care of her. She was a sweet lady and pleasant, but you could tell she was not wanting to be where she was. When I did my assessment, she was pleasant and sweet and interacted in a conversation. I learned the computer information as well. An RN even stood next to me and showed me how to chart when my patient was discharged. The biggest thing that happened today and impacted me a lot was I did CPR for the very first time. I was just working on my documentation when a nurse came to our floor and told us to drop what we were doing and follow her, well we ended up in the ER. I will never forget this moment it was scary because it was my first time, but at the same time my adrenaline went through the rough. I was nervous at first when I was about to do the CPR all I could think was, “Will I do it right, will my hands be in the correct position, will I press hard enough?” Yes, I was thinking all of that but as soon as it was my turn my adrenaline went crazy and the training I had was there. I did what I needed do to, and even though it was scary all I could keep thinking is, “I can’t quit. Yes, my entire body is sweating and on fire, but I am trying to save a life along with all these other people.” When it was all done, we went back to where we were supposed to be and million things were running through my

Volunteering as a Health Scholar at Riverside Community Hospital has given me any opportunities to go above and beyond for patients. During my rotation as a Patient Experience Ambassador, I was able to go into each room on the Telemetry floor and make sure each patient was as comfortable as possible while being able to talk to and get to know a few of them. One specific patient, however, seemed to be having a bad time but would never ask for anything because he did not want to bother the staff. I took this opportunity to make sure he was comfortable by checking with him every 30 minutes to see if I could help him adjust in the bed, could get him something to drink and even just talk to him. Eventually he did ask me for a newspaper and I searched…

My partner and I were designated to help care for an elderly gentleman who recently had an ischemic stroke. Our resident was sleeping in a chair in the center room and neither of us wanted to wake him until it was time for breakfast. I asked one of the LPNs on the unit if she needed any help and she wanted us to take our residents vital signs before medication administration. We awakened him and walked him to his room to provide for privacy while we took his vital signs, which included taking blood pressure manually. This was a skill that I was not entirely confident in, but I knew it was crucial and something I needed to do; it was essential to put my patient first.…
