Cell Count Procedure

When describing a typical day at work she mentioned the procedures normally expected, but a lot more on top of that. As the one designated to run the lab, she gets there at 7:00 a.m. and sets up and calibrates all the necessary machinery to run tests on blood, numerous bodily fluids, urine, and tissue. Using automated equipment to compile results for these tests, things like cell count, toxic components, and morphology are looked for. Cell count is often used and must be done without machinery when looking for white blood cells and platelets as in some individuals they range in size too greatly or clump together. It is very crucial to take the time to do the job correctly even though at times it will be very frustrating because the consequences are very dangerous and very real. It takes the right kind of personality to have the patience to do these types of tests and do many of them simultaneously and quickly to keep up with the amount of lab test requests that hospitals often get. The one thing the world never runs out of are sick people, so the work will never end. Another kind of blood test that is very common is determining blood type to confirm it for transfusions. Giving someone a different blood type than their own or what they can accept is a fatal mistake and will painfully kill anyone. Quality control is something that must occur on a regular basis to make sure that the equipment that you are using is working correctly. Typically, you run a “fake” test that you already know that answers to and run the test to see how calibrated the machine is. Without this important step, all the results may not turn out correctly, causing significant damage.
