The most important role of the CEO is to be the head of the team. To be available, supportive, and decisive in all matters relevant to the organization. The CEO also serves as the “face” of the organization within the community. Always being cognizant of this fact, and representing the organization well, is crucial to being an effective CEO.

White (2015) was tasked with strategically planning the improvements of the OR and ED departments. Since they could not be done simultaneously, it was determined that the OR would be redone first. According to Mr. White (2015), they quickly realized the project was going to run out of money. As a result, a capital campaign committee was started in an attempt to raise money from the community to cover the capital shortage. Raising capital was important; however, what turned out to be most critical was understanding that the strategic planning process involves adapting to circumstances as they change. Mr. White (2015) stated that some traits the he feels are essential to a health care administrator are hardworking, honesty, trustworthy, and loyalty. Also, a strong knowledge base, breadth of experience, a well rounded personality, the ability to be a team player, and the ability to think outside of the box are all key attributes in successful health care administrators.
What advice did he give you as a student in health care administration?
Mr. White’s (2015) primary advice to students in health care administration is to continue to work hard, expand your knowledge base, be patient with your career goals, show people that you are an asset, don’t be afraid to take chances, get your foot in the door and gain experience, find someone that can be your mentor right now, and stay connected to your university.
