Horton Hears A Who Essay

In this book called Horton Hears A Who!, the main character is Horton the elephant. While he was splashing the pool, he heard a small speck was talking to him. He realized that there were people living on the small speck, which means the speck was a tiny planet. The community of the planet was called Whoville, while the Mayor of Whoville asked Horton to protect the planet from being destroyed and Horton agreed and promised that he won’t let them down. However, Sour kangaroo and the animals in the jungle tried to criticize Horton from doing this. At last, a small shirker named Jo-Jo shouted “Yopp” and the animals heard that Yopp. The existence of the Whoville was proved by the Yopp sound and Horton. Prejudice is an social issue in human society, it is one example of discrimination. In this book, Horton is the once who was being prejudiced. Every animal in the jungle prejudiced Horton of his weird behavior of protecting a little speck. They did that because they didn’t believe there was a tiny world on the tiny speck. Therefore, they criticized Horton from doing this behavior by threatening him and even tying up Horton. This is a prejudice because they formed an opinion ,which don’t believe in Horton and his claim of the tiny planet, before they know the fact that the tiny planet actually exists. This is a common social issue in our current society. There are many prejudices based on people’s race, gender, religious and social class. For example, some people would assume a people from middle east, wearing Islamic clothes and speaking Arabic language a terrorist just based on his race, nationality, language and religious. It also shows the conformity in our society, most people stick one social norms and prejudice the other minorities in the society. Just like Horton, he was the minority of the jungle, his behavior of protecting the speck was seemed odd by other animals like kangaroo and monkeys in the jungle, so they bullied him since he was not sticking on the social
