To Kill a Mockingbird was made by the author Horton Foote. This book is a fiction story based on the novel by Harper Lee. This screenplay’s setting is an old countryside type, which shows the environment and surroundings dirt roads, golden grass, and dry winds. Jem is a character who lives in this world. He is known to be an adventurous, interesting, and serious child. First of all, Jem has an adventurous personality, he would choose dares instead of truths, a means of risk. For example, on one of his mischievous adventures he sneaked into someone’s yard, in which is owned by a mysterious person called Boo, who has an infamous reputation for some suspicious reason, Jem and his friends decided that they wanted to see what his face looks like, considering that they heard rumors about his appearance.(24)

His curiosity got the best of him and his friends, in turn they were caught looking through the window, and told to go home. One of the interesting actions Jem did was that he had “mustered up spit to open the gate slowly, then lifting it aside and resting it on the fence” (24). In order for them to remain undetected they had to make the hinges of the fence gate not squeak, so they spit on it to give it a moisture, which was unexpected, considering that it was a possibility that the plan could have not worked, the reason being is that it could have been an oil-can to really get it to stop squeaking, instead of just spit. Jem is shown to have a manly face, but only by his looks/facial features, or meaning that he looked quite serious or is quite serious as shown in this quote “He has a manly little face” (5)which was said by one of the characters, and was shown throughout the story, but what made Jem serious was how others thought of him, and “manly” is a look that could be shown as serious, unlike wimpy, drowsy, or
