During the time I had spent with Amy in her dorm room, she allowed me to participate in a tarot card fortune reading for myself. In relation to witchcraft, the symbolic meanings of these cards bring upon psychic senses between the reader and the participant. These cards, in a sense, call out to the reader and are not simply picked out based on an artistic style. Additionally, if chosen correctly, the deck will form a bond with the conductor and will therefore only function if handled by their owners. As this process needed the utmost attention in order to be completed, I was asked to not write notes while having my cards read. Before beginning, Amy told me to pick out which set I wanted, which I then picked the horseshoe placement; The Horseshoe placement is based on determining the past events and how they will reflect the future outcomes. She began by telling me to relax, as the cards …show more content…
Without delay, she placed the cards in a arch and flipped over the top card or the front of the horseshoe pattern. Despite the card's position, either inverted or not, will determine your attitude towards the question. Soon following the description of the symbol on the card, she then picked up the far most left card and continued the process until the last card on the right. In the order she read, the cards foretold the past to the near future. These cards have a symbolic interpretation, as well as the ability to make logical connections to the questions. Whether or not the Tarot cards actually determine the future or just offer advice, the whole concept allows for a sense of relief or uneasiness for those who believe. As Vida Winter says in the beginning of the story "all children mythologize their birth". But for Aurelius that was not the case, he had nothing but to construct a mythology of his birth since Mrs. Love found him on the porch as a infant. There is no one in the book who can connect and relate with him to the reality of his history. Mrs. Love telling her story proves the central mystery of Aurelius's background. “Because if Mrs. Love found me, it can only mean that before that happened, someone else, some other person, some mother must have—”.…

Then, she started to transform herself into a whole other person, a person with tattoos covering her body, a person with clothes covered by thorns, a person who was fearful of herself. She wanted to look so scary, so fearful, that nobody would ever disrespect her again. That was until love found her, it was love that healed her from her wounds, it was love that liberated her from her sorrow, and it was love that conquered the fear that resided in her. One of the main ways Alice Hoffman used to demonstrate the theme was by using the plot of the story.…

In any story symbols contribute heavily to the overall meaning and take away from that literary work. In “The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson, one very symbolic article is that in which the slips are actually drawn from; that is the black box itself. Representing darkness and danger the black box incorporates and truly represents the fear and blindness following of the societal ways. Every year as society “advances”, if one shall even call it that, the societies ways and values are forgotten more and more. The black box itself is described as deteriorating by growing “shabbier each year” and now it was “no longer completely black but splintered.”…

History is always trying to be decoded in different ways. Geoff Eley, author of in A Crooked Line, attempts to describe the quick transformation between 1970 to 1980 from social history to cultural history because of dramatic reforms in political standpoints and the linguistic turn of the social history that was studied in earlier years. The goals of Eley’s book is to not only describe how the world changed from studying social history to cultural history but also to highlight the importance of accepting change in how we study history and how instead of shunning interdisciplinary work, it would be promoted since it can provide dozens of new ways to analyze the past. To better understand this Eley provides a personal narrative and ties together…

When the story begins, the unnamed narrator and her father are driving up the mountain to the house of the father’s mistress. This affair of the fathers is by no means a secret. After the narrator’s mother finds an earring that is not hers, she says, “‘Tacky costume jewelry’ she said, as if the quality of the earring angered her more than their presence in her bedroom.”…
