Not only do most of these horses receive incredible care, but the economic benefits for the United States are simply astounding when you care to look at the numbers.
Some of the people against horse racing say that the people who work in the horse racing sector of the equine industry don’t care about their horses. Last semester, one of my classes took a trip to Saratoga to visit a horse racing stable, Bonds Racing Stables and watch their horses work out. One of the owner of the stable’s, Jim and Tina Bond, horses got loose after being frightened while running and caused his rider to fall, spooking him further. The horse preceded to run off the track and headed for home. After successfully catching the horse and calming him down, instead of making him return to work he was brought back to the barn to be iced (like a football player after a hard work out) and given the rest of the day off. Where would the 844,500 horses involved with racing (according to the same AHC study stated earlier) go? I suppose you could throw them onto meat trucks and ship them out to Mexico or Canada to get slaughters for meat, but that is an entirely different argument then the one at hand. Next time you see a horse race on television really watch them go. These are animals who through evolution were made to run. You wouldn’t force a bird to stop flying, why force a horse to stop
