Our investigation started by investigating the loading of Sean Tarry’s horse. We found with the load in from Randjies that the horse loaded fairly well and that during the trip to Turffontein went calm as expected of a first time runner. The horse ran in race 1, and the return was scheduled after race 3 with the half an hour that we have to give the race 3 runners, but they only started loading after race 4. The horse loaded into the float with no problems the door was closed at the back enclosing the horse in the loading bay where she stood shuffling around. The driver then inspected all the loading ramps to make sure that they are properly closed and secured, he then asked all the grooms if all is ok and if he can leave. The supervisor then contacted the Phumelela Representative that was present in the boardroom Darren McEwan, which in his turn sent the vet on duty down to the loading ramp, to assist in this matter. They then removed the horse with the help of spare grooms. The driver asked the groom in the next berth what happened because at that time the groom holding the horse could still not communicate what happened. The groom in the next birth told the driver that the horse started misbehaving, rearing up twice and then reared up once more hitting the front of its head on the inside of the bottom of the roof. The supervisor upon arrival at the ramp started enquiring what happened by asking the grooms and the groom holding the horse what happened. The vet instructed the driver to close up the ramps and proceed with his trip to Randjies because of the horse on the float starting to get restless. The groom holding the horse was unable or unwilling we not sure of which of the other to communicate to the supervisor or driver and he seemed to be in shock.
