Horror In Middle School

There are lots of arguments and points on if the horror genre is appropriate or inappropriate for the middle school age. Many people have different reasons on if students should be exposed to horror or not and I think they should not. I think so because being exposed to horror at a somewhat young age can have bad effects like aggression and violence, sleep disturbances, and even extreme things like symbolic catharsis. There could be lifelong effects involved with being exposed to horror which is why
I think it is not appropriate for the middle school age.

Another effect the horror genre can have on teens is sleep disturbances. When people get scared at night they usually get scared to sleep and have trouble with sleeping because when people watch movies or shows that are scary anything becomes scary like a shadow, a sound, even the air conditioning turning on can frighten someone terribly.
Many adults and children have trouble sleeping immediately after watching a scary movie. From the article The Lasting Effects of Horror Movies on
Children and Teens by Lisa Fritscher , she says “Shadows seem intimidating, noises are magnified and dreams are often unsettling.” Even though those are all just short term things that scare you for one night and then you get over it, it can build up feel or give you lifelong fears. Horror Movies was not an enjoyable passage. Throughout the story the writer was very negative especially when she talked about her dad. In the first paragraph she states “My father left home in the early 1950s to write movie scripts in Hollywood, California. My mother, not wanting me to grow up thinking of myself as a pitiful little fatherless waif, would take me up to the Rose Theater to see his B-grade horror movies when they came to town”. In the first sentence it seems as though she give off this negative vibe when she talks about her dad, like she is mad he left.…

In "Call Me" by Chris Kunitz, the line "you make fun of the way I act" reminds me of my middle school experience. I was in isolated, with no companions. Consistently, I'd detach myself from everyone, and sat on a bench all by myself. I wore odd clothes and spoke differently, in contrast to my peers. I felt like a ghost, floating off into a different world; every other person was grinning and upbeat as I watched like an inept fool.…

My first day of middle school was hell, I have always been good at school. My grades have never been bad and neither have my actions and or attendance. Probably from having a mom that is also a teacher. I look at that as a good thing though, watching kids just goof off and not come to school then high school rolled around and it was like I got to look down on them because they did not prepare for bigger and better things. School wasn't bad for me because it was hard, it was bad because i was always shy in school.…

What is horror? Before you can define the horror genre you need to define horror. Horror in my opinion is something that will leave you in a frightened state of being, something that will make your heart race in expectation, something that will put your guard down just to scare you. So the horror genre are stories, movies, television shows, news reports that will frighten you, make your heart race in expectation, or puts your guard down to spike it back up. In order for a story to be considered part of my definition of the horror genre, it needs to have the supernatural, a formal tone, and a first person narrator.…
