Management practices have been extensively researched to evaluate which techniques might be more beneficial to horned lizards. The oldest and most commonly used management technique is prescribed burning (Scifres & Hamilton, 1993). This allows for an area to “restart” its plant succession. Fire is important in these semi-arid to arid environments where these animals are found because historically they contain bare ground, early succession plant life, and old growth in a mosaic of habitat (Whitting & Murray 1993). Preference for utilizing previously burned habitat has been noted for Texas Horned Lizards in earlier research.
