Horizontal and Vertical Time I started doing yoga last year. I would try to meditate everyday. Especially during exam weeks, mediation helps me focus on the materials and prepare for the exams. Mediation and yoga clears my mind, and make me more aware of myself and things around me. Stress puts a lot of pressure for my body. Massages are always good, but the best way to relieve stress is by meditation. I was very excited to try out this exercise. When I close my eyes, I start to focus on my breathing and clearing of my mind. Then I followed the directions. I started to keep in mind that I will have to take a trip down memory lane and into the future. Every breathe I took I think back to the most recent big event, then slowly thinking back to when I want younger. Some events I have already mentioned earlier. Memories of me being at the hospital because my dad was sick. How tough it was to go through. Then the memories of Chris come into play in my mind. His last smile he gave me, the way he looked at me before running off into the waters. It was as if he was saying goodbye. I worked on these deep breathing exercises and positive coping statements as homework assignments just like any other of my homework assignments. The relaxation training techniques that I employed were a variation of methods that included autogenic relaxation, visualization and Yoga. When using the method of autogenic relaxation, I repeated the word relax in my mind before the stressor was introduced. Using the method of visualization I formed relaxing images that I have experienced in the past and tried to use as many senses as I could like sound, smell and touch. Such as laying on the beach listening the waves while smelling the salty wind whip threw my body.…

Meditation/ mindfulness exercises are something I have wanted to incorporate into my life weekly. The first time I have even done a mindfulness exercise was in counseling with my therapist. I would do it once a week before every session. I found it really helpful to start out each session with a quick five-minute exercise. Without even knowing I went through four of the five stages in the transtheoretical model: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, and action.…
