The picture shows the graphic intensity of war. This is a picture of a man who has been gassed, presumably by Cl2. Cl2 was a gas used by both sides that irritated the eyes, lungs, and skin; it is a very nasty gas that is lethal and toxic. The man is lying on a stretcher, he has been shot, and it looks like he has been shot multiple times as spots of deep color are shown on his clothes. These dark spots look similar to an entry wound that blood is pouring out of.…
Equality is all we have ever asked for, so why is it difficult to understand and give. In “Still Separate, Still Unequal” written by Jonathan Kozol, describes and addresses the problems with our public schools. Kozol mainly focuses on the racial segregation and the isolation students still face today. He uncovers the inequality the education system puts among their students of color. For example, most of the funding for schools goes primarily to white schools, while giving the minority schools the remains.…
Health and nutrition have been an essential part of life since the beginning of time, but more recently these topics are shared and examined more frequently than ever, especially in America. In Michael Pollan’s article “Our National Eating Disorder,” Claudia Kalb’s “Food News Blues,” and Karin Kratina’s “The Right Thing to Do?” it is made apparent that how we eat may be just as important as what we eat. These three authors make very valid points about American’s obsession with health fads and negative thinking towards many food groups.…
How Two Different Positions Compare at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs When comparing two positions at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) hospital, you must recognized the similarities that come with every employee first. The majority of the employees at the VA must determine where they are going to park before they start their work day. If parking spaces in the back fill up, which they do quickly, most employees park at the Shriner’s Rite parking garage about four blocks away, and catch the shuttle that takes employees back and forth from each facility.…
So....there is this song called "Outside Looking In" by Jordan Pruitt. You probably heard this song in the classic Disney movie called "Read it and Weep". If not then you probably never heard of it. I really enjoy listening to it because it speaks to my heart about being left out.…
“Two Kinds” is a story based on a mother and daughter, and how they had their own opinions on how the daughter should be. The mother wanted the best for her daughter, but she also wanted her daughter become something she wasn’t, a child prodigy. The daughter tried to please her mother but in the end she just wanted to be herself, to stick to her own mindset, not her mother's. She tried everything in beginning that her mother wanted her to do, but later grew out of trying to please her mom because she believed it to be unrealistic. She knew she just wasn’t the child that could become a prodigy, at least she didn’t believe that she could be.…
After first reading D’J Pancake’s short story, “Time and Again,” it is very easy to compare that story to an episode of Criminal Minds, called “To Hell and Back” (Lucas Turner, 2005, n.p.). When we read the story in class, I immediately began comparing the two together. There are so many similarities between these two stories and their main characters, even if they are different. In both stories, there are men who seem to have a mental disability that causes them to do almost the exact same thing, which is feeding humans to domesticated hogs (Pancake, 2006).…
AN ENJOYABLE READ and also very intellectual, How to Read literature like a professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas Foster has now turned into one of my favorite reads. Not only is it informal, it also has an upbeat style that makes you want to continue reading. Throughout this novel I learned a multitude of ideas and helpful tips. While reading, Foster not only creates a question to ask yourself, but also explains his reasoning.…
As the movie continue you are able to see various scene that showed confrontation between the different racial groups one of the scene that stood out to me is when Buggin’ Out (Mookie’s friend) a character who is renown for speaking out his mind. Notices all the pictures at Sal’s pizzeria are of famous Italian. This angers him and he chooses to confront the owner (Sal). Since Sal is Italian is, he lets Buggin’out know that it is pizzeria and he can hang up whatever picture he chooses, but Buggin’ out demands that Sal puts up some black people on the wall due to the fact that the pizzeria is in a black neighbourhood but Sal refuses. This causes an altercation between the two of which end with Buggin’out threating to boycott Sal’s Pizzeria and…
The song trying to be cool by the indie band Phoenix was an important hit in 2012. The band originally comes from France and the writer is Thomas Mars. Trying To Be Cool became one of the most popular songs because of its meaning, swing and lyrics that all represent a very trendy stereotype of how a man ‘hits’ or seduces a woman. Throughout the song Mars uses literary devices such as metaphors and symbolism to describe how he entices a woman. Most importantly, it shows the struggle he has in the process of this and how he deals with it.…
The Underlying Effect of Forgiveness The story The Underneath by Kathi Appelt (2008) begins with a small, very pregnant, calico cat abandoned by her family, left to die on the side of the road. She started to wander trying to find a place to sleep, finding a abandoned nest to curl up into in hopes of getting out of the terri-ble storm. The next day she awakes to a song being sung by an old hound.…
Take a Closer Look Although things may seem one way at first, take a closer look and maybe something will change. Maycomb’s perspective from the the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is not necessarily the right one. There is too much controversy on race, gender, and social class during 1933 for there to even be a “correct” perspective. Some residents had no weight on their shoulders that hindered their appearance.…
There are many MESSAGES that an individual can analyze from “A Stroke of Insight”. For example, Jill speaks about how her spirit could “soar free” during her stroke and that she found nirvana. The fact that Jill nearly died and she could find nirvana or peace within herself, means that anyone is fully capable of finding peace within themselves. In addition, if Jill can find something positive in something as frightening as a stroke, we can find the positive in any situation. The RECEIVER of the message was the audience that watches her speak.…
This is not your typical boyband, the ones that all dance the same and dress the same. No, these five boys have dominated the entire world with their angelic voices, handsome faces, and each having an amazing personality, this band is called One Direction. One Direction is the best boyband that has walked the planet. They were making history before they even released there first album. Having lots of involvement in charities and breaking records every time they release an album or single.…
“Someday someone is going to come, along and knock this old thing down.” This is the fence we are talking about, and this fence represents racism. The little girls in this story don’t like the fence because it gets in the way of friendship. It is easy now to make friends with anyone, but back then the parents didn’t want there kids to be friends with different color kids. In the story, The Other Side, by Jacqueline Woodson a loving and caring girl named, Clover, the protagonist learns that you need to be accepting of people no matter the difference.…
