In the play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare, Hamlet, who is the prince of Denmark, was supposed to be the heir to the throne after the death of his father, King Hamlet. Instead, his father’s brother, Claudius, takes over as the new king of Denmark and also marries Queen Gertrude, Prince Hamlet’s mother. A couple months after the king’s death, Hamlet is still very upset that his mother married his uncle and in such a short time after the death of his father. Horatio, one of Hamlets close friends, is a guard of the castle who sees the dead king’s ghost and believes it could mean trouble for the land of Denmark. Horatio decides to tell Hamlet of this ghost sighting in hopes that if it is the ghost of the dead king, he will talk to his son, Hamlet. …show more content…
This is when Hamlet comes up with the plan to have the actors act out a play that he writes. It is actually going to be the death of his father and he wants to see how Claudius reacts in order to prove if he did kill King Hamlet. Sure enough, just as the play was acting out the part of the king being murdered, King Claudius gets up and leaves in a very upset manner. This is when Hamlet truly believes that Claudius did in fact murder his father. Hamlet sneaks into Claudius’s room to kill him but doesn’t because he is in the middle of praying for forgiveness and Hamlet doesn’t want Claudius to go to heaven. Hamlet then goes to talk to his mother where she tells him he hurt the king’s feelings and Hamlet goes on to say that she has married the man who killed his father. While they were talking, Polonius was hiding in the room eavesdropping and Hamlet hears him. Thinking it was Claudius, he stabs him. His father’s ghost then appears and reminds him that he needs to seek revenge. While Hamlet was talking to this ghost, his mother could not see it and thought that he really was going crazy. Just as the grave for Ophelia was being dug, Hamlet and Horatio finally arrive and soon realize it is Ophelia who has died. Hamlet becomes grief stricken and starts to say just how much he loved her and that he would do anything for her. Laertes and Hamlet start to fight which is broken up when King Claudius reminds Laertes to remain calm, he will get his revenge. The next day, Hamlet told Horatio that he had switched the letter that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern carried saying that Hamlet was to be killed in England, to one that ordered for them to be killed instead. He did this in order to come back to Denmark to finally get revenge on his father’s killer. Finally, the duel between Hamlet and Laertes took place. Before the fight started, King Claudius tells hamlet to drink after a good hit and then he will put a valuable pearl in his cup of wine. Well, Hamlet did not drink after his first or second hit so his mother, Gertrude, took a drink out of the poisoned cup for him. During the battle Laertes hits Hamlet with the poisoned sword and while they were fighting, they switched swords on accident and Hamlet gets a hit on Laertes. Soon after, Gertrude falls over dead because of the poisoned wine and Laertes then tells Hamlet that the king is responsible for the poison. Hamlet gets extremely mad and stabs Claudius with the poisoned sword and makes him drink the poisoned
