Literature has always been a worldwide phenomenon. That being said some literary works are better than others. Romance is one of the worst. These novels are filled to the brim with cliches and unrealistic situations. They also have become fuel for unattainable relationship expectations in the real world. Sarah Dessen is a popular Romance writer that often commits these literary sins in her books. However there is an evil worse than Sarah Dessen. The men and women that enjoy her books and try to defend them to the rest of the population. The most evil of these people are Hopeless Romantics, Old Maids and In the Closet Romance Lovers. This essay will become a guide to each of these personas, how they look and why the act the way they do. To start this guide I will begin with the easiest to spot and most common of the three, the Hopeless Romantic. They can often be spotted on the prowl for a potential mate. This is down by passing glances to all suitable members of their preferred sex. However they usually are unable to pounce due their inability to flirt due to the low amount of social interaction they have because they often have their nose in a Sarah Dessen novel. Which in turn causes a never-ending cycle to begin of looking for the “one”. That …show more content…
From my findings I am led to believe their social awkwardness begins their mutation. In middle school everyone is in state of social insecurity, but unfortunately the Hopeless Romantic does not progress any further form this stage. The high consumption of books causes this blockage of evolution. They only know how to communicate with the books they read. Which means when they are ready for relationships they have under-developed social skills prohibiting them from making connections. That causes them to find the wanted relationship in novels. Often these novels are Romance causing them to be a Hopeless

In today’s world, the genre of romance has a very different connotation than it did over 150 years ago. Nowadays, romance novels are typically about two people falling in love and living happily-ever-after. However, in the beginning to mid 1800’s, the idea of Romance didn’t have much to do with relationships. The era of Romanticism was one that was marked by a strong contrast against the ideals of the more scientific Enlightenment that had occurred some years previously. It is in this period that many famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more first made their presence known as serious American authors.…

Out of the many stories I decided to choose the three that stood out to me the most. The three stories I chose to write about are Coffin K, Roxana & the Naked Philosopher, and Burning Buddhist. Each one of these stories reveals the deep connections people can make with others or certain things which affect their own lives greatly. Love remains a frequent topic in literature because of the countless opportunities to explore emotions and to delve into the human psyche to ponder what truly causes someone to love another person. Furthermore, love is multifaceted, and Hawthorne focuses on a different aspect of love within a relationship in each of his two stories. Although “The Birth-Mark” and “The Minister’s Black Veil” both contain elements of Puritan society, delineate the relationship between a man and his partner, and consider how far love can drive a person, each story examines a different kind of love that a man and a woman have for each other. Georgiana unconditionally loves Aylmer in the same way that Mr. Hooper unconditionally loves Elizabeth, but both of their respective partners, Aylmer and Elizabeth, conditionally love them and fixate upon a single, minute detail, the birthmark and the veil, which they perceive…

Treatment of Women in “Othello” and “Trifles” Throughout history the handling of women has evolved. From the Victorian Era to the latter half of the nineteenth century many authors have championed the unfair treatment of women in books, poetry, short stories, and plays; however two authors have penned works worthy of comparison. In “Othello,” a maiden marries for love; however she is ultimately the fatal victim of her love. On the other hand, in the play “Trifles,” the downtrodden Minnie murders her abusive husband. Both Shakespeare’s “Othello” and Glaspell’s “Trifles” present the theme of patriarchal dominance through female characters who exemplify submission, victimization, and veiled strengths.…

At first glance, Fantomina: Or, Love in a Maze by Eliza Haywood appears to be a mystical tale of a woman who uses her ability to change her appearance in order to pursue a lover. Once compared to Samuel Johnson’s idea of what the new task of novels should be, a variety of the elements of the novel contribute to the feeling of a romantic story, giving it the illusion of being meant purely for entertainment as opposed to being connected to the, “living world” (2924). However, Eliza Haywood adds enough complexity to the story that it becomes more a question of whether it is actually meant for entertainment, or if it is a more powerful commentary about women and their role in society. One of the many ways that this novel emerges as a more romantic…

The noir genre was similarly reactionary as its predecessor, romanticism. At the end of the 21st century, the progress and development of the society showed its unlimited abilities and the abandonment of the religious faith. Romanticism and its “eventual child”, gothic genre, was a reaction against the rapidly materializing world and the negation of its former ideals. The beginning of the 20th century faced similar challenges and certain disappointment in the big brave world. The emerging “literature noir”, as the gothic fiction before, aimed at exploring the darkest corners of the human nature in the cold and indifferent world.…

This essay examines how race and gender are portrayed in a music video Anaconda by Nicki Minaj from 2014. Callaghan essay on “The Ideology of Romantic” argues that the desires in romantic love are benign, and the feeling of love presents as evanescent. In today’s society, most of the relationships presented in books, movies, TV shows, and other media are romantic in nature. However, “This Is Not a Love Song” by Brendan Mathews veers away from that normal occurrence. Although some of the relationships that are presented in the story are romantic, the main focus is on the constant friendship between the narrator and Kat, the subject of her many photographs. Mathews uses a unique and interesting sort of snapshot vignette style of writing that includes very specific and intentionally placed details, similar to the ideas presented in “The Writer’s Goal” by Guy de Maupassant. Maupassant’s ideas focus on using different literary techniques to show the reader exactly what the writer is trying to…
