The tone of The Old Man and the Sea is very hopeful because Santiago overcomes all of his obstacles and ends up catching the marlin. Hemingway says, “I [Santiago] want to see him, he thought, and to touch and to feel him [the marlin]. He is my fortune, he thought” (95). This quote provides a very hopeful tone by showing how important the fish is to Santiago. It shows that he was trying to stay strong by thinking about his past. While on the boat, after a hard day of fishing, Hemingway writes, “After that he [Santiago] began to dream of the long yellow beach and he saw the first of the lions come down (...) and he rested his chin on the wood of the bows where the ship laid anchored (...)” (81).
