Once rehabilitated inmates were paroled and put back into the society. The prisoners were given a small job at the local supermarket to get them back on their feet. People such as Brooks and Red were paroled, but with their new freedom were disappointed with their new lives and jobs. Brooks has no hope for a better future, he is attempting to adjust to life outside the prison walls but has no self-worth and no friends or family to support him throughout this time. Brooks wrote a letter to Red and said “I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid. I've decided to leave. I doubt they'll kick up a fuss. Not for an old man like me.” With no hope for any development, Brooks hangs himself. Brooks had nowhere to find hope and that is what lead to his death, there was no sign of a better life for him. This shows how it is in human nature to give up when we have no hope. When there is nothing to work towards or no hope of advancing further, we give up. This can be seen in the today’s society in means such as sport when teams have not been winning they decide to give up hope in winning the game.
