In life’s most catastrophic days, detrimental moments, and in each misfortune one faces there is always light at the end of the tunnel. The most crucial thing to have when facing adversity or pain is hope. One must believe that they can succeed in order to do so. From experiencing a car accident, to moving away from family, to having one’s house burn down in a fire, one must always stay positive. This message is portrayed within several different texts. In “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers,” the poet, Emily Dickinson, writes about how throughout life’s challenges and arduous moments she believed and hoped, while explaining that hope is free. Similarly, in “Oldest Known Holocaust Survivor Dies; Pianist Was 110,” Mark Memmot tells the story

What’s Left In The Box Zeus, the most powerful of all gods, created a woman from clay called Pandora and later gave Pandora the gift of a box with the condition that she must never open the box. Yet, when Pandora could no longer stand it, she took the key, and opened the box. Out poured disease, poverty, misery, death, and sadness - all shaped like tiny moths, which stung Pandora repeatedly and she slammed the lid shut, leaving hope in the box, which later fluttered from the box like a dragonfly, healing the wounds created by the moths. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, many characters’ lives changed for the better when they found hope, because hope can bring positive events to one’s life. We should have a source of hope.…

While reading The Management of Grief by Baharati Mukherjee, I noticed a couple different themes throughout. The main theme that caught my attention was having hope. In this short story, the main character Shaila loses her husband and two sons in a terrorist attack that left a whole plane full of people dead. Shaila has to come to an acceptance that her family is gone and move on. This theme is portrayed in the characters, Shaila and Judith Templeton the most, them being polar opposites.…

In the fictional story Children of the Sea, the author Edwidge Danticat, conveys an idea that life goes on. Danticat does so by portraying her characters as weak beings with lack of hope in the beginning and having them grow as strong, hopeful people who learn to let things go. The female character in Children of the Sea is a great example of gaining hope and understanding that life goes on. When the female character comes to the realization that there is nothing that she can do, she turns to hope as if it is her true guide. “People are just too hopeful, and sometimes hope is the biggest weapon of all to use against us” (Children of the…

    How We Hope Analysis

In this paper, I will discuss the orthodox definition of hope expressed in Adrienne Martin’s How We Hope: A Moral Psychology, and emphasize the inherent problems raised by Martin that challenge this definition. Martin derives the ‘orthodox definition’ of hope from the works of Day and Downie introduced in the late 1960s. Day states that “hope involves (1) desiring and (2) estimating a probability” and names these two constituents of hope as the desiderative and the estimative constituents, respectively (Day 89). And this definition has its merits: it seems illogical that A hopes that X will happen if A doesn’t desire X to happen OR X is impossible.…

Hopes, dreams, and goals; we all have them, but how do they push us to do more? This paper will be using three articles The Secret of Life by Walter Mitty, How We Lose Hope and How to Get it Back, and The Wills and Ways of Hope. These will demonstrate how hope can drive one to move forward by providing something to work toward. Hope and dreams allow people to feel like they have something important to work toward and goals provide specific objectives to get there. Hope can keep you alive in the harshest conditions or keep you working to finish an English paper.…

Hope is never ending because despite it having drawbacks something positive always remains. For instance, if one hopes for a better tomorrow and their dream is not fulfilled, almost instinctively one still keeps hoping. Hope is natural because no matter how many times one is let down, there is always a trickle of hope left in them. These ideas are corroborated from “Blackberry Picking”, by Seamus Heaney. In this text, Heaney presents a point that albeit the human soul is greedy, in its darkest of time, it too strives for hope.…

Throughout a life time everybody is able to witness people who strive and prosper in times of conflict as a result of grasping onto something which gave them hope, and everybody also see’s people who subsequently perish as a result of not being able to find their inner hope. Proving my point to persuade my audience I was able to find evidence from the movie Paradise road using Rosemary as an example of perishing from losing all hope in opposed to Wilma Young whom was a ‘brave women’ and got through conflict by having hope for her future. Lastly I shared a personal experience of when I was confronted with conflict confining in hope to pull through, also using somebody I know of as an example of perishing due to not being able to confine in…

Editor’s Note These five poems were selected for their commentary on suffering, pain, and madness. Dickinson seems to have an unusual view on these topics because she views them not as purely negative, but rather as honest and having the ability to edify those have borne them. In some ways, Dickinson seems to portray them as natural reactions and alternatives to the stoicism and artificiality of society. It is interesting to consider how these topics affected Emily Dickinson specifically as a woman poet. How is suffering connected to women and the roles they expected to perform?…

What exactly is a social imaginary? A social imaginary can be defined as the interpretive understanding of the world, what a good life looks like, and how we can attain it. A Social imaginary encompasses the creative and meaningful dimensions of the real world, the dimensions through which people in our society create their ways of living and the rules by which they live on earth. Growing up in an African American household, my parents taught me that life is tough and I would have to work two times harder than my competition to achieve success and be the best human being I can possibly be given my potential. I view the world we live in as a survival of the fittest type of environment which has shaped my social imaginary.…

Cherish hope The following quotation has been true to me in times of distress. It has also been helpful to women experiencing labour pains during child-birth.
