When looking into the eyes of this boy, what do you see? Pain? War? Genocide? What about hope? Though the anger and pain of this boy is clearly depicted, there is still hope in him. In Haunting Eyes, there is a boy with a look that is chilling enough to make you think of the things he has gone through, and everything that he witnessed. This image is disturbing and goes into detail of the photo. Noonan also writes more about this boy’s past, whose name is Omran. Noonan writes with detail and explains what happened to most of his family members. Noonan provokes more emotion by stating the fact that he is not crying, considering what just happened to him, and points us to the fact that “ by age 3 or 4, crying becomes more of a decision,” and that “ if circumstances were harsh enough that you couldn’t rely on help or comfort, then you might not cry”. The false optimism as displayed by the villagers of Sighet in Elie Wiesel's Night is used to create suspense and instill a sense of despair into the reader. The reader, conscious of the Jews' inevitable demise, is bewildered again and again by the villagers' refusal to accept the truth of their situation. Unable to acknowledge the impending danger and unwilling to take action, it is evident the Jews themselves are an indirect factor to their downfall. Ultimately, the purpose of Wiezel's elaborations of the naïvety of the Sighet Jews are to parallel the same sense of hopeless desperation as felt by the Jews imprisoned in the death camps.…
