In “Doves on Wires,” by Joseph Kirman, a father is easily distracted from the dreadful circumstances of the Jews in World War II by the idea of hope. In “Street for Arrivals, Street for Departures,” by Charlotte Delbo, travelers during World War II focus only on how good their lives can be at their destinations, forgetting about the dangers of the death camps.
