Introduction The 17th Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer was a huge success this year and has been for the past 17 years. I had the opportunity be one of over 400 volunteers for the event, which allowed me to gain skills for my potential future in the field of sport management, and possibly, other related fields. The volunteer sport organization, or the organization that provided the opportunity for the community was the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, which is an organization that creates events and fundraisers in order to support the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Their mission is “ to support the mission of Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital to be one of the best hospitals in the state of Indiana” (bloomingtonhospitalfoundation.org).

One important lesson I learned is that it takes a great amount of planning and volunteers to run an event similar to the one I volunteered for; I was amazed to see how many people were wearing volunteer shirts around the event. Planning was required in the setup of the race, who would speak at the opening ceremonies, where sponsors could set up their tents, what volunteers would work where, the scheduling of the event, different activities the participants could complete, prizes, and various other aspects. Something else that I learned from my experience is that advertisement is an important factor for an event similar to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. Not only is advertising important for sponsors, it is also important for awareness of the event. Before I ever volunteered for Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, I had seen students walking around campus with the shirt on from last year’s event. It made me curious and I was surprised when my coach offered the opportunity for us to volunteer for the same event.
