During my senior year in high school, my friend Jonathon George and I created a charity event called Hoops for the Cure. This event was made to acquire donations for members of the school population battling cancer. In days leading up to the event, students would travel to businesses asking for contributions for the cause. During school, offerings were also accepted in a drop off box. The main event was a basketball game between the Hempfield High School men’s team versus the Rec All Stars. This was a matchup people couldn’t pass up. The event took place on April 12th at Hempfield High School field house. On the day of the game, the place was packed with fans that supported the cause. It was a great turn out. The Rec All Stars won with a three

As part of my leadership course at Grand Canyon University I was assigned to volunteer/internship in an experience that would enrich my future career. I was very fortunate to work out an agreement with the Director of Security and Safety at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona and the home of the NHL Arizona Coyotes. My current career has me working at the University of Phoenix Stadium over seeing responsibilities in security and guest services. By volunteering to work at an NHL arena, I felt it would give me insight on how other professional sporting facilities operate with the belief I would gain some experience and takeaways that would become better at my current job and possibly expose me to a bigger world within the sports/entertainment industry. During my time working at the arena I kept journal entries of each of the games that I worked at and used those documents to help reflect on what knowledge I have gained and how my Grand Canyon University experience enhanced my volunteer involvement.…

The Butterfly Effect was a major topic covered during this course. As discussed by Edward Lorenz, the Butterfly Effect is where a small change can cause large consequences for the future. It is based off the metaphorical example that the flap of a butterfly’s wings can affect the weather on the other side of the world. Normally, we relate it to how a past small event or decision was a foundation for who we are at the moment or on who we are becoming. Many children's sports teams give out participation trophies at the end of every two week long seasons. Children who regularly participate in these sports teams are frequently bringing home many meaningless medals. These trophies are, in most cases detrimental for the youth receiving them.
