When thinking about going off to college, people just assume that college students are going to hook up all of the time. In North America, 60-80% of college students have engaged in some sort of hookup experience. This is a high statistic.
One reason that most assume that college student’s hookup occasionally is because of the movies and TV perception of college. In just about every movie and TV show, all of the students are having some sort of hookup. Sure, not every college student is not having a hookup. It depends on how a student was raised and what their beliefs are as to if they are going to engage in any hookups. If one is raised with a conservative background, then they are less likely to engage in hookups. One thing that was talked about was the general acceptance of casual, uncommitted sexual encounters and the decline of traditional courtships. While talking we discussed that so many people are having uncommitted relationships because one does not have enough time to be in a committed relationship. While being in an uncommitted relationship, one can come and go as they wish and they are not under pressure to do things with one another all the time. College students are always very busy between trying to study and keep their grades up and doing things with their friends. We felt that really after emerging adulthood, casual uncommitted relationships are frowned upon. When one who is in middle or late adulthood is in a casual uncommitted relationship, they usually are cheating on their spouses and there is never a good ending to the story. This usually ends up in divorce and if there are children involved, then strain is put on the children to please both of the parents who are at odds with each other because of the things that they have done to each
